Rep. Michele Bachmann kicked off her presidential campaign on Monday in Waterloo, Iowa, and in one interview surrounding the official event she promised to mimic the spirit of Waterloo's own John Wayne.
The only problem, as one eagle-eyed reader notes: Waterloo's John Wayne was not the beloved movie star, but rather John Wayne Gacy, the serial killer.
Mrs. Bachmann grew up in Waterloo, and used the town as the backdrop for her campaign announcement, where she told Fox News: "Well what I want them to know is just like, John Wayne was from Waterloo, Iowa. That's the kind of spirit that I have, too."
(Someone has already posted the clip to YouTube under the name BachmannLovesGacy) John Wayne, the movie legend, is in fact from Iowa and the John Wayne birthplace is a celebrated landmark only it's in Winterset, which is a nearly three hour drive away from Waterloo. Gacy, though, had his first taste of the criminal life in Waterloo, where he lived for a short time, and where he had his first criminal conviction for an attempted homosexual assault, which landed him in prison for 18 months. He would move back to Illinois, where his killing spree started, and lasted about six years. In 1980 he was convicted on 33 counts of murder, and was executed in 1994.

Just wait for campaign ads with the one who must not be named saying North Korea is our allies.
ROTFL!

There isn’t enough room in the Clown car for all the candidates who need to be pushed out of the race.
They are all there to get Romney the nomination.
Don’t you know it’s his turn.
(said about the same amount of times and with the same derision as John Kerry was in Vietnam)
You're right. But...two things. She's from WATERLOO..so even if she's not...absent...she's careless in the biggest moment of her political career.
Feel Better?
Gov Palin doesn't have to take the oxygen out of MB's campaign. MB is turning it off all by herself.
Geez! What are her researchers smoking? Are they all illiterates?
First of all this is the kind of mistake that a candidate simply shouldn't make - unless she was talking off the cuff and that would be even worse. When you are retail politicking you damn well better know what local stuff you are talking about because the actual locals will see it as a big insult if you couldn't simply check Wikipedia to see a basic biography.
I've been defending Bachmann in a general sense of fairness (and hope) but this can not be blamed on some graduate student or what not. The gaffe (mass murderer vs. American icon) takes only second to going to Concord, NH and saying she was proud to be right where the Revolution started.
As of now Bachmann is down to her last couple cat lives in my book. These kinds of mistakes would be devastating in a general election.
It also wasn't her campaign kick off trying to set the tone of who she was!!! John Wayne Gacy
*rolls eyes*
“I hope she get’s the Boston Strangler & Son of Sam’s endorsement next.”
ROFL!
Maybe she can get a thumbs-up from Casey Anthony while she’s at it. That could carry Florida for her. ;)
She took the low road today and she is going to have to pay the price. Wallace said he was wrong and he was sorry for his suggesting she was a flake, and then she refuses his apology and then immediately says something as flaky as you can imagine.
The irony cannot be lost on even her most ardent supporters.
Her campaign died today. She is joining the ranks of Gingrich who also committed political suicide on the day of his announcement.
She grew up there until the age of 12.
I guess those first 12 years don't mean anything. /s
OK, I'll bite. Just as nobody ever would refer to the turning point on the Eastern Front in World War II as "The Battle of Prohorovka" (read: Kursk).
Or, as G.K. Chesterton once pointed out, if there ever were a naval battle where the hero turned out to be a sailor named "Snith," after a hundred years or so, you would find that ALL the histories referred to him as "Smith."
Just sayin'...
Cheers!
("And speaking of clueless brain-dead Right-Wing fanatic Christianist fundamentalist women...")
NO cheers, unfortunately.
Serial Killer?
Hey that is Not A Problem for Bachmann!
Just look at this COCAINE DEALER Bachmann wanted pardoned by President Bush:
Bachmann wrote the letter urging the president to pardon Vennes for his 1987 conviction on federal money laundering, illegal firearm sales and cocaine distribution charges.
Bachmanns original letter of support for Vennes pardon wouldnt be so unusual if it werent for the fact that he is not even a constituent of Bachmanns. Vennes home is in Shorewood and his business address is listed as Excelsior, neither of which are anywhere near the 6th District.
Vennes, however, has been a major financial contributor to Bachmann since 2005. He and his wife, Kimberly, have contributed a total of $27,400 to Bachmann since 2005. Vennes brother and his wife, Greg and Stephanie Vennes, have contributed another $8,400 to Bachmann since 2005.
I'm thinking (hoping), Romney will flame out. I have a hard time believing he's going to dodge the implementation of Romneycare when the base starts to vote in the primaries.
Trying to use where she was born to enhance her political image and glom onto the John Wayne theme just burned her into an out of touch toasted and fried sandwich.
Rollins plan backfired.
Reagan made Gaffes. It’s how you handle it.
Refusing the apology by Wallace and then making an outright flaky comment today is loaded with irony.
“Good grief, some staffer gave Michelle this error about John Wayne being from Waterloo and she repeated it.”
Highly probable, makes me wonder if she might have a mole inside her campaign trying to make her look stupid. But, no, I know the candidate doesn’t do his/her own research on such “trivial crap”; but, Michelle is the “Captain of the ship”, and she is the one who ultimately pays the price.
However, as for me, Michelle’s ideology is correct, and I won’t abandon her ship. Palin/Bachmann2012(or vice versa), just get rid of this currect treacherous occupant of my WH.
She is a funny lady.
So he deserves everything that's coming to him.
I could say more, but it would be in execrable taste.
Just think hubris and nemesis.
NO cheers, unfortunately.
