Michele Bachmann and Mitt Romney lead in first Iowa GOP poll
LA Times Blog ^ | 6-25-11

She hasn't even officially announced her presidential campaign yet, but already Rep. Michele Bachmann is virtually tied with Mitt Romney in the 2012 Iowa caucus polling season.

In the first summer poll, published just minutes ago, the Minnesota congresswoman who was born in Iowa has 22% to Romney's 23% lead in the still developing field of Republican presidential prospects, according to the closely-watched Des Moines Register Iowa Poll.

Business executive and tea party favorite Herman Cain finished well behind with 10% in the poll. No other Republican attracted double-digit support.

The former governor from next door Minnesota, Tim Pawlenty, lags at 6%.

Bachmann will appear on two of the Sunday morning talk shows. And then formally launch her run for the Republican nomination Monday in Iowa. After, she'll do the same in New Hampshire and South Carolina, three early states that have historically played major roles in deciding the nominees of both parties.

On Tuesday, no doubt by coincidence, former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin will be in Iowa to campaign for -- wait for it -- the new documentary movie about her life, "The Undefeated." The premiere that day is already sold out. Palin has not indicated her decision about a 2012 race, but too much delay this summer could make her decision irrelevant. The poll reported no numbers for Palin.

Republican ex-Sen. Rick Santorum (4%) will also be wandering around Iowa this coming week, along with Rep. Ron Paul (7%) and Newt Gingrich (7%). Even President Obama will visit Iowa on Tuesday to talk more about creating jobs.

Ex-Gov. Jon Huntsman (2%) has indicated he will not be making a major effort in the Hawkeye state. Presumed GOP front-runner Romney, who finished second there to Mike Huckabee in the 2008 caucuses, can't appear to be writing off Iowa.

Bachmann will be on Fox News Sunday, and Face the Nation, later, where we can get to know her a little better.

RE :”The Hubert Humphrey conservatives never see problems with wars ever.

Mises? I have posted them here before, maybe 100 times.

Here's the thing about wars. Don't start them because once you do you have a hell-of-a-mess on your hands. Back under GWB and even early last year that opinion was not very popular with Republicans and got many of them mad at me.

Just abandoning allies is not as easy as it sounds as previous Dove Obama has learned.

Sorry to disappoint the media, but Governor Sarah Palin has not even declared she is running. And if she was to do so, she would quickly steal all of Rep. Michele Bachmann’s advantage and knock her out into single figures. This is just hopeful speculation by the media that Gov. Sarah Palin is somehow affected by this. They are talking up Rep. Bachmann because they know and I know Bachmann is the weaker candidate between the ‘tea party queens’ against Mr. Obama. In fact they will talk up almost any republican candidate other than Palin. Should have listened to Politico, MSNBC and CNN last week, for the first and only time they are actually saying complimentary things about Bachmann, when in the past the level of abuse she got from the likes of Chris Matthews was immense. It is like that abuse never happened now. But believe me if Bachmann runs againist the annointed one in the White House they will tear her to pieces. I hope the republicans don’t allow the media to pick their candidate again like 2008.

“Hubert Humphrey conservatives” - Irving Kristol was on the Hubert Humphrey task force in 1968. He didn’t like McGovern in 1972 and voted for Nixon. Socialist Michael Harrington in 1973 wrote a article about him and his buddies called “The Welfare State and Its Neoconservative Critics.” Until that particular Socialist decided to call those particular ex Trotskyite Democrats “Conservatives”, it was assumed that they were Liberals.

Now, they’re part of the Republican party, and considered “conservative”.

They should at least have a poll that includes a “What if Palin ran?” scenario.

A couple of them do and she tends to do pretty well.

I think this one only includes those who have filed the paperwork.

(That being said, the only polls I take seriously are at the end of the primary and the one in November 2012.)

If she advances to the nomination, who will Bachmann select as VEEP?

(I'm guessing Marco Rubio).

Are you Lawrence Auster?

If not, your are stealing other people’s writing and claiming it as your own.

I’ve been seeing a lot of this lately here on FR, not even bothering with quotes or credit where credit is due.

If you ARE Lawrence Auster, then well said..

Why is it that conservative women pols are always being told they need to “bone up” on history? I know a lot of male pols who could start hitting the books if need be told.

Why not say you totally disagree with her position on Afghanistan and will not support her until she changes that position? Why is the implication that she’s somehow uneducated?

Mutt Romneycare is not a serious candidate for any conservative. He's a joke thrust on patriots by socialist and commie crossovers.

Bachmann does not have my support while Rollins still works for her. Rollins represents an evil that infects the GOP like a foul, socialist disease. I will not tolerate the presence of a RINO traitor on the team of anyone who calls themselves conservative.

"First poll I’ve seen where Bachmann is just one point away from Romney’s runaway {snicker} lead."

While that is great news, given that Perry is said to be ready to enter the race, I would like to see what the polls look like with him in it.

ESPN had a poll of the likely Super Bowl winner this season. Some Palin supporters accused ESPN of having “PDS” for not including Sarah Palin, who obviously could handily beat any team in the NFL.

Just another example of MSM pushing Bachmann. I had predicted this for some time.

The poll has a 2nd red herring aside from the fact that they are pushing MB. Romney in first in Iowa??? The most surprised person in the world will be Romney, who has been planning to basically skip Iowa.

Are we going to see team Romney change it`s strategy now because of this “very very respected” (according to ABC Amonpour) De Reg poll?...what a joke...No Romney knows he is not in first place, and is not about to re evaluate because of a phony poll.

There has been a giant wink across the Rep Est/MSM polling outfits to leave Palin out and push MB

Actually, I “kind of” agree with it, the devil being in the details. Christians understand something about both God and the devil that most atheists don’t. This might help an America under a Bachmann administration achieve something in an Islamic Afghanistan that the atheistic Russia could not. But she needs to point to concrete signs of progress that gives a reasoned basis for hope. This is where knowing history can help her make a clearer case, if one exists, for why she believes she can succeed where Russia failed.
