The creators of the play Book of Mormon have created the Amos and Andy for the South Park set. We may laugh, but our grandchildren will shudder as decent folk do at wits of the last century whose favorite dance was to jump Jim Crow.
The parts of the Book of Mormon I have seen are as innovative as a Newsies revival and as funny as the cruel, tasteless jokes told by an inebriated coworker at a Christmas party. The difference is that the coworker might sober up in the morning, but the mindless mockery that also gave us South Park will continue.
After all, the theater establishment toasted the two with Tonys and the insiders would never cheapen themselves by rewarding a play for picking on a minority religion loathed in the theater community or behave like decadent Romans horrified by a growing moral minority comforting the libertines by mocking the moral.
I cannot know for sure without seeing the entire play. If we assume the play a brilliant satire with PR unfortunate enough to release only the cruel and facile bits, then we are still left with two unfortunate truths about this play. First, the writers are cowards. They inflict pain and mockery on those already despised while going soft on the tired assumptions of their rich and powerful patrons. Second, in a pluralistic society they have targeted a group already misunderstood and discriminated against.

“...but Mormons have a history of being persecuted.”
...Yeah, like when po’ old Joseph Smith was hitting on other men’s wives and their husbands didn’t like it.
...Or when a local newspaper started to reveal what he was doing and po’ Joseph the victim sent a mob to destroy private property.
...Or like when mormons massacred an innocent wagon train, killing women and children and then sending out mormon women to loot the wagons and bodies.
...Or like daily when they pervert the Bible here on FR and others point it out...
It’s so undeserved! They are victimized just like Jewish people!
Of course Joseph Smith Jr, their fraud/prophet was shot by his brother Hiram.
Aside from that and the various murders of settlers and wagon trains trying to cross US territory on which the Mormons were settled, I find most Mormons to be peaceable to outsiders. Not saying that their “heretic” sects practice of raping female children and driving off young men is acceptable
Here's what mormonISM is founded on:
Joseph Smith published a newspaper article in his Mormon Newspaper in Independence, Missouri in 1832 wherein he wrote, "I have consecrated the riches of the gentiles unto my people who are of the House of Isreal."
In 1838, Joseph Smith was arrested for Treason against the United States.
Between 1842 and 1844, Joseph Smith:
a. Proclaimed himself "King of Zion", which he claimed held dominion over the United States
b. Appointed Brigham Young as the new Mormon "President of the United States"
c. Appointed other church leaders in his secret "Council of Fifty" as Governors of the various states and territories
d. Began forming his "Nauvoo Legion", which he claimed would be a "100,000 man militia" to be used to overthrow the US Government with military force (this is where all of the resurgent Mormon militias of the 1880's and 1890's came from, (like the Viper Militia and the Michigan Militia)
e. Inducted himself into the US military as "Lieutenant General" even though he had no prior military experience, and began wearing a military uniform
f. Began legitimizing polygamy by formally announcing his "doctrine of polygamy"
g. Formally announced his "Doctrine of the Constitution Versus the Law", which taught that Mormonism was the law of the land, which superseded America Law)
h. Formally created his new "Melchizedek Priesthood", which made all Mormons superior to "Christians" and made them "not-subject" to the man-made Judeo-Christian laws of America, or the Laws of Moses (10-commandements). Smith's new superior priesthood (superior to the older "Aaronic Priesthood"), made all Mormon males "man-Gods" in their own right who now "held the keys" to circumvent the Christian laws of Moses and the Judeo-Christian laws of America
Of course no group has been as cruelly treated as African-Americans, but BY Mormons...
there, fixed it for you. The Mormons are as hypocritical as the current pResident riding in Air Force One. I am sure you are in solidarity with those that claim they will become gods. You are your own joke! Others just observe and laugh!
In 1978, after decades of political wrangling and social turmoil, the Mormon church finally changed their policy barring people of African descent from being "ordained" with the priesthood. The church never admitted they were wrong to discriminate. Instead, they claimed that "God" had changed his mind on the topic, and that the church as a whole would now follow the latest decree from"God" himself, as revealed to his prophet and mouthpeice on Earth, Spencer W. Kimball. ...
Church leader Bruce R. McConkie, on the denial of equality for Africans:
NEGROES IN THIS LIFE ARE DENIED THE PRIESTHOOD; under NO circumstances can they hold this delegation of authority from the Almighty. The gospel message of salvation IS NOT CARRIED AFFIRMATIVELY TO THEM... NEGROES ARE NOT EQUAL WITH OTHER RACES WHERE THE RECEIPT OF CERTAIN SPIRITUAL BLESSINGS ARE CONCERNED... (Mormon Doctrine, 1958, p. 477)
Oh come on writer; the MORMONs just LOVE to be a victim!
Oh poor widdle me, I’m so persecuted.
It is a lie that Mormons practice polygamy. That was over 100 years ago and today polygamy will get you excommunicated. I wish the anti Mormons would stop lying about this.
Whatever. I’m not going to post anymore. Bye bye and God bless.
...only the many similarities between Joseph Smith and Mohammed...
There are lds groups that have left because the view SLC lds are an abomination to Joseph Smith and his teachings, they follow the original non changed rules/ regs of Joseph Smith.
There are no anti-mormons posters but there are many anti-mormonISM poster.
I referenced that in my post immediately following the first one.
I missed that — but a little restatement of the truth never hurts...
Now that's funny! And yet so true!
“It is a lie that Mormons practice polygamy. That was over 100 years ago and today polygamy will get you excommunicated. I wish the anti Mormons would stop lying about this.”
There are mormons today that practice polygamy, just like Joseph Smith and Bring ‘Em Young did. They follow the mormon scriptures just as they are written.
“Whatever. Im not going to post anymore. Bye bye and God bless.”
Facts?
Evidence?
Logic?
Zip.
Same story, 18th verse... see ya next time Sandy.
My prejudice regarding mormonism is based on a mountain of learning, knowledge and understanding. I actually almost became a mormon around 1980, but even before the internet one could find the information needed to make the correct decision.

....seems you use the world yard stick to measrue faith instead of the Holy Ghost!
Thank you for sharing how you understand faith.
Who is John Smith?
Not so, oh accusatory one.
First of all, I recommend you give up mind-reading; it reflects poorly on you -- not to mention grading vs. posting rules. A Lie is something with specific intent. How do you prove that, Sandy? With your Joseph Smith factory outlet rocks?
Secondly, the "excommunication" reference you gave...
(a)...didn't apply to Mormons in the first third of the 20th century...Mormon leaders at that time let polygamists be...And even since then, I haven't heard of the Mormon church excommunicating any polygamists among those supposedly living near Kolob...have you?
(b)...doesn't apparently apply to Mormon general authorities TODAY who've double-dipped at the eternal marriage well...Or do you deny the Mormon doctrine of eternal polygamy? (No? Then just move on, Sandy...PR spinism doesn't work around people who have access to the same handbooks Mormon bishops do)
Besides, Sandy...surely even you must be looking forward to the day when the Mormon jesus returns...and McConkie, as Lds "apostle," promised us a new millennium of earthly polygamy. Tell us, Sandy, when that time comes, how many more wives is your husband going to choose?
Oh, btw, the spin you give on polygamy isn't making it past the media and ex-Mormons like Carma Naylor. Carma was just interviewed this week for a June 22, 2011 article on the new ad campaign in NY. Here's what the article says in the Christian Post:
In the past few years, Mormons have lost numerous PR battles with the American public. Television shows like Sister Wives and Big Love showcase a sect of Mormonism that practices polygamy, a practice that the church outlawed in the late 1800s. Also, the Tony-award winning musical Book of Mormon portrays Mormons as simplistic and a bit naïve. Words like weird, homophobic, and cultish are often associated with the church. Therefore, it is easy to see why the church would want a PR makeover. However, Carma Naylor, author of the book A Mormons Unexpected Journey, which details her life decision to turn from Mormonism to Christianity, is a bit skeptical of the campaign. Its great if a religion wants to abandon error and turn from false prophets but to deny what their leaders teach is wrong. You cant sweep it under the rug, Naylor told The Christian Post. She explains that polygamy is still in the Mormon doctrine and it is a message that Joseph Smith taught.
