Legendary television actor Peter Falk, who was best known for his role as a squinty, rumpled detective in the hit series Columbo, has died at the age of 83.
Falk died Thursday night at his Beverly Hills home, according to a statement released by family friend Larry Larson.
A cause of death has not been released.
In 2008, his daughter Catherine Falk, said he had been suffering from Alzheimers disease and dementia.
Falk won four Emmys for his starring role in Columbo, a show on which he appeared in 69 episodes.
Columbo began its history in 1971 as part of the NBC Sunday Mystery Movie series, appearing every third week. Columbo became by far the most popular of the three mysteries, the others being McCloud and McMillan and Wife.

Serpentine, Shelley! Serpentine!
Before everyone hops all over me, I was thinking of Princess Bride, not the Never-Ending Story. The kid read the Never-Ending Story himself.
RIP - Peter Falk who was so brilliant in one of my all-time fav movies, “The Inlaws”. A few quotes by “Vince” (Falk) , the CIA agent.
Serpentine, Shel, Serpentine!
[after a wild car ride in NYC]
Sheldon: Did we hit the little boy on Sixth Avenue?
Vince Ricardo: No, we missed him by a good foot and a half.
Sheldon: You were involved in the Bay of Pigs?
Vince Ricardo: Involved? That was my idea.
[On working for the CIA]
Vince Ricardo: Are you interested in joining, Shel? The benefits are terrific. The trick is not to get killed. Thats really the key to the benefit program.
Really? Please tell me you don’t judge a man’s worth by his voting record.
Everybody loved Columbo.
But if you haven’t seen the 1979 version of The In-Laws with Peter Falk and Alan Arkin, you’ve missed a great flick.
The movie was “The Princess Bride”, and he was reading to Fred Savage.
Exactomundo, see post 28!
Yeah, funny, funny movie. Loved "The In-Laws".
Why .. Yes .. I do!
Don’t You?
He was in several of my favorite movies of all time, Murder By Death, The Great Race, The In Laws, and Princess Bride.
Lionel Twain: I’m the greatest! I’m #1!
Sam Diamond: To me, you look like #2, know what I mean?
Thought of him the other day when my son was watching Independence Day. He was an excellent actor and will be missed.
His characters were good, but a liberal non the less. I may appreciate some of his work, but as for his personal voting record it showed a bit too much liberalism for my tastes. But what else would one expect from Hollyweird?
Wish they would all follow Falk.
...his peugeot
...his trenchcoat
...his unlit cigar
...the wife you never saw
images that come to mind.
BTW: I no longer have dealings with a neighbor of mine because he told me that he voted for Obama and will do so again.
I told him I would vote for Palin if she ran!
He and I agreed not to piss each other off anymore!
IT MATTERS (in my mind) that you just might be a Commie/Marxists!
Was a great show. RIP Peter Falk.
It’s a Mad Mad Mad Mad World was the first time I saw him, as a cab driver. I think he and Eddie (Rochester) Anderson were a scream.
He played in two Neil Simon movies, Murder by Death and the Cheap Detective—two of the most hilarious films you’ll ever see.
As the Cheap Detective, he met with a particularly seedy character played by Dom DeLouise in some middle eastern club. The guy was known for dousing himself with bad cologne. Falk had the greatest line as he sat across from him, “Geez (fanning the air with his hands). How can you stand to be around yourself?”
R.I.P.
