Gov. Bev Perdue has vetoed a controversial proposal to require voters to show photo ID at the polls.
Her statement:
The right to choose our leaders is among the most precious freedoms we have both as Americans and North Carolinians. North Carolinians who are eligible to vote have a constitutionally guaranteed right to cast their ballots, and no one should put up obstacles to citizens exercising that right.
We must always be vigilant in protecting the integrity of our elections. But requiring every voter to present a government-issued photo ID is not the way to do it. This bill, as written, will unnecessarily and unfairly disenfranchise many eligible and legitimate voters. The legislature should pass a less extreme bill that allows for other forms of identification, such as those permitted under federal law.
There was a time in North Carolina history when the right to vote was enjoyed only by some citizens rather than by all. That time is past, and we should not revisit it.
Therefore, I veto this bill.

The Secretary of State in Mississippi has stated that we have 4 to 6% vote fraud. This means that my vote is only worth .95%, this disenfranchises me. We had a sucessful petition drive and VOTER ID will be on our Nov. 2011 ballot and is expected to pass. When I was working for the petition I read an article published bt a New York law school department that was very much against Voter ID, they concluded the article with the statement that “Voter ID only makes a difference in close elections anyway” I can only assume that they have a particulr % in mind that they believe they are entitled to and that we must overcome. I have read that “the number of “illegals” that were illeagally registered and voted more than made the difference in the Nov. 2010 Colorado US Senate race. We must stop ALL illegal voting
Governor Perdue is for stealing elections and this talk of disenfranchisement is crap.
IMO, if you don’t have to show a photo ID to vote, you don’t have to show a photo ID to the cop who pulled you over for speeding or the clerk you want to cash your heck.
These idiotic excuses for striking down voter ID laws are juvenile and ignore the other functions of life that requires someone to confirm their identity.
What an idiot. When I lived in NC in the late ‘80’s I remember having to show my ID when voting. Could have been my polling place.
Also, you had to register to vote in person and swear on the Bible. Sounds like barriers to me.
No, it means what it says. Every time an ineligible voter votes, it disenfranchise YOU, because it cancels out your eligible vote.
She must want illegals, the dead, and felons to vote Democratic.
Surprise Surprise.
Got a close up on voting fraud a few years ago when I saw that my son had "signed" the voting roles, and apparently voted (his entry was just above mine in the book). He was not in the voting district, having moved away from home more than a year previous. When I talked to him, and remarked that I saw that he voted in this ward, he denied having done so - and he is scrupulously honest. I can only deduce that this was a stolen vote.
So, anyone who has a list of people who have left the area, but are still on the voting roles, can send in a proxy to vote for the candidate of their choice. Without insisting on proof of identity, this fraud can continue indefinitely.
Okay, I may have gotten it backward as relates to this bill, but you get the idea of what I’m saying. :-)
The legislature has adjourned. Don't know whether they can call a special session or will. IMO unlikely.
I find it hard to believe that North Carolina is so different from Indiana.
What this ol'gal forgets, as do all too many Democrats, it's whether or not your vote is counted, not whether they looked at your ID.
Democrats are afraid to face up to public judgment in free and fair elections!
That's because they are ALL FASCIST PIGS.
no one should put up obstacles to citizens exercising that right
Agreed. Showing an ID isn't an obstacle ... if you're a citizen, that is. But one "obstacle" to voting rights is having your legal vote DILUTED by thousands of illegally-cast ballots. How 'bout those, governor?
Agreed you need a drivers license to drive to vote...that is unless you have a van drive you there free and they give you a buck or smokes to vote a straight party D ticket. With Purdue vetoing this law that Obama and his cronies changed the dead can vote easier too. I heard the local legislatures debate this.
The dems said “poor people can’t vote” and pubs are mean. They used the argument also that if you change counties by moving you can;t vote. This is BS you re register responsibly if you want to vote OR they let you show a utility bill. This was not good enough for the dems. They want all the illegal mexican strawberry pickers to vote many times as they have 75 per household.
Can someone from the state of PA please post your voter ID laws because Obama can’t win w/o taking PA.
Some Dems who opposed the bill would have to vote for an override, and that seems unlikely. A strong majority of NC voters support voter ID, so this could be a factor in the 2012 election.
That'd be a solution to the problem ~ just set up all the polling places in courthouses and police stations.
Let’s be friggin’ honest, (Insert Democrat).
The reason you or any other Democrat who does not want identification required to vote is that you want to be re-elected by felons, dead people, paid SEIU-ACORN activists or illegal aliens, period.
No one in today’s society can honestly say they do not have ID, for God’s sake, illegals are issued ID’s in towns in CT and CA. Even Granny has a copy of her birth certificate and ID card, irrespective of if she drives because she needs it for Medicare and prescriptions.
The parallels of poll taxes and the disinfranchised are absolute and utter lies, and those who suffered under those conditions would roll over in their graves to hear the association.
You desire re-election so much, you, and every other Liberal Democrat will do anything to retain power. The men and women in uniform who take bullets to preserve that sacred right you spit upon that for personal gain.
Alinsky was right in some ways, it is a means to an end, not a principled journey. What the Left does not understand is that one day the Right may use Alinsky and defeat (or worse) every maggot Liberal and Marxist moron in our society.
The ends of finding Communism are not worth it, the nation is, Bev.
You are a POS Commie Libtard,
wac3rd
Let me tell you something if Obama wins NC again KNOW it is via downright cheating and voter fraud.
That’s obviously just a crock. We’ve had photo ID in VA for about a dozen years.
Hopefully the NC legislature will override him OR, if there aren’t enough votes now for an override, NC’s legitimate voters will see that he and those who uphold his veto are gone after the next election.
Bev is a D, as in “She’s a Dumbass.”
These are silly arguments for a Governor to be making.
How many eligible voters really do not have a photo ID? There are about 6 million registered voters in NC, but how many of those do not have a photo ID?
How much would it cost the State to put together a mobile unit to go into the neighborhoods and produce Voter Photo IDs? Eligible voters would still have to present acceptable documentation to get their Voter Photo ID, but it would be FREE, with the State paying all expenses.
