On Fox and Friends this morning, Congressman Darrell Issa (R-CA) discussed his expectation that Kenneth Melson will resign his position as Acting Director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (BATFE) today, as part of the fallout from the "Project Gunwalker" scandal. Last Thursday, we looked at what is emerging as apparently the "best" excuse the "gun control" lobby can conjure up in order to absolve the BATFE of guilt for this murderous monstrosity: that because the Senate has refused to confirm a permanent BATFE director, the agency is "leaderless," and thus cannot help lurching from one folly to the next.
This is not a new approach--the Brady Campaign's Paul Helmke test drove it way back in March, in what seems to have been the forcible citizen disarmament lobby's first ever acknowledgment of "Project Gunwalker." This is what he said then:
The basic problem is that the ATF has not had a permanent head in five years. The person that George W. Bush had proposed was blocked in the Senate; the person that President Obama proposed is blocked in the Senate. ATF has no leadership, nobody calling the shots; they have very little resources.
The Coalition to Stop Gun Violence (CSGV) has taken up that rallying cry on Twitter and Facebook--over and over and over and again (and a couple more times). Last night, MSNBC's Rachel Maddow joined in (see sidebar video; less than one minute)--and was promptly thanked by CSGV for doing so.
There are, of course, a couple real problems with this "excuse." One is that even an acting director has both the power and the responsibility to, well . . . act as director. While there might be something to the notion that a permanent director commands more respect

Thought it was “Fast and Furious” that was the problem, not “Gunwalker.”
power corrupts absolutely...
same thing.....
“They are grasping at straws. That lack of permanent leadership at the ATF only points the finger more firmly at the White House.”
Exactly.
I think congress should be able to appoint an interim directer of their own with the intent that he conduct an investigation from inside.
This is good, very good. Let them erect this pitiful defense, then lay it in Holder’s lap. The blowback will be twice is effective.
Government abuses like THIS are another reason why all Americans must now put our 2nd Amendment FIRST!!
It was an intentional criminal act with treason as the ultimate goal.
“same thing”
Not the same thing. “Gunwalker” was under Bush, and weapons were tracked electronically, and seized before crossing the Border. “Fast and Furious” under Ubama, let the weapons cross the Border. Big difference! People calling F & F “Gunwalker,” gives others the opportunity to say it was created by Bush. It was changed so much by Ubama that it was no longer remotely like the program under Bush!
¨Meme¨ is a word invented by the atheist Richard Dawkins, and does not appear in my Websters New World Dictionary (1957). Two reasons why I won´t be using it, thanks.
Thank you! The anti-gunners are counting on exactly this kind of ignorance to help save their hide.
Wow.
Do you have a reliable link that explains the difference between “Gunwalker” and F&F? A LOT of Freepers and 2nd ammendment rights newsletters use the two terms interchangably...and I think it is important to distinguish a Bush initiative from an Obama catastrophe.
I’d like to make sure people make the distinction and it would be helpful to have a link.
Thanks.
It’s getting very confusing! marktwain informs me that there were three different names involved! If I now have it straight,,, Gunrunner was under Bush, Fast and Furious under Obama, but the BATFE called it Gunwalker??? Very confusing! I just don’t want people to retort, “Oh yeah? Well Boosh started it!”
But, whichever is the correct name for the Bush project, GPS stuff was imbedded into stocks, the guns were tracked and seized. Not allowed to cross the Border. And that is a distinction that must be made!
I have a better idea.
Get rid of the ATF.
All gun laws are unconstitutional.
Ted Baxter is a pompous moron and closet leftie.
The Regime must treat Melson VERRRRRY carefully, as this gun-grabbing phony has the goods necessary to fry both Holder and Obama.
Agreed, but you have to go farther than that. ATF has been abusing citizens for decades. I would pardon EVERYONE convicted of non-violent firearms violations of the NFA act, GCA, FOPA, etc.
I would then issue a blanket pardon for everyone who wanted to manufacture, transfer, buy, sell, possess, repair any title 1 or title 2 firearm until the gun laws were repealed and replaced with anti-criminal with illegal gun laws.
I would then fire each and every person every associated with ATF and bar them from federal law enforcement. Someone in the 90s that did 2years with them now over at DOE? To damn bad, no one ever associated with ATF will ever get a federal job again. Never.
Works for me.
