The nation's largest newspaper publisher is laying off another 700 employees to cope with an unrelenting advertising slump.
Gannett, the owner of USA Today and more than 80 other daily U.S. newspapers, hoped to complete the cuts Tuesday. The layoffs are occurring at most Gannett newspapers but not at USA Today.
The payroll reductions represent 2 percent of Gannett's 32,600 employees. The division targeted in the cutbacks employs 22,400 people at newspapers that include The Indianapolis Star and The Arizona Republic.

I wonder if they will claim their layoffs were “Unexpected” or “Due to the weather”
And I also wonder if those laid off grasp the total irony that the very same Liberal policies they propagandized for are the very same polices that contributed to the economic conditions leading to their own layoffs.
Unfortunately, few of those losing their jobs are newsroom leftists. These are people in ad sales, accounting, delivery, marketing and production.
>Didn’t USA Today endorse Obama (and his economic policies) back in 2008?>
They still do and more liberal than ever. There’s a reason why WSJ took the top spot of number 1 newspaper in America from USAT because they kissed Obama’s ass so hard USA Today nauseated their readers.
I wish the Fort Worth Star Telegram were a Gannett newspaper and just disappear... The “StartleGram” is nothing but a mouthpiece for Progressive Demorats and an obama apologist. In over a ten year period of time the StartleGram printed dozens and perhaps hundreds of articles on illegal immigration - 99% of which supported Illegal Aliens... “poor pitiful hard working yada yada yada blather...”
Hope they are enjoying the obama downturn they refuse to write about.

LOL I’ve traded emails a few times with that liberal jack@ss.
That boy has the negative synergy of stupid and stubborn.

A federal appeals court handed a major defeat to Wall Street banks by ruling that an online news service did not misappropriate their stock research by publishing headlines about analyst upgrades and downgrades.
Reversing a lower court ruling, the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said Theflyonthewall.com Inc should not be punished for systematically republishing “hot news” on its website.

Our local paper is a Gannett paper. Try getting decent coverage for a community activity, especially a patriotic one. Darned near impossible. Yet if coverage was reliable and consistent, the membership would subscribe or give them clicks. Heck, if they would allow excerpting or even just linking here on FR, they’d generate more traffic. Nice business model they have going there, a blue editorial bias in a red county.
Did you see that Ed Henry left CNN to become FOX NEWS chief WH correspondent..
One can only hope that those laid-off voted for nobama. Bwahahahahahahahaha! to them.
Yes. Fox is the loser on the deal.
Now more on the “hot news” ruling. HUGH, HUGH and SERIES impact.

Justia.com Opinion Summary: After a bench trial, the district court entered a judgment for plaintiffs concluding that on seventeen occasions, defendant had infringed plaintiffs’ copyrights in their research reports, and that by collecting and disseminating to its own subscribers the summary recommendations with respect to securities trading contained in plaintiffs’ reports, defendant had committed the New York state law tort of “hot news” misappropriation. Defendant appealed the judgment and injunction against it on the “hot news” misappropriation claim. The court held that plaintiffs’ claim against defendant for “hot news” misappropriation of the plaintiff financial firms’ recommendations to clients and prospective clients as to trading in corporate securities was preempted by federal copyright law. Based upon principles explained and applied in National Basketball Association v. Motorola (”NBA”), the court held that because plaintiffs’ claim fell within the “general scope” of copyright, 17 U.S.C. 106, and involved the type of works protected by the Copyright Act, 17 U.S.C. 102 and 103, and because defendant’s acts at issue did not meet the exceptions for a “hot news” misappropriation claim as recognized by NBA, the claim was preempted. Accordingly, the court reversed the judgment of the district court with respect to that claim.

The Court held in favor of the AP, with Justice Mahlon Pitney’s writing for the majority. A vigorous dissent was given by Justice Louis D. Brandeis.
Pitney held that the information found in the AP news was not copyrightable as “the information respecting current events contained in the literary production is not the creation of a writer but is a report of matters that ordinarily are publici juris; it is the history of the day.” Instead, Pitney approached the issue from the perspective of unfair competition. He found that there was a quasi-property right in the news as it is “stock in trade to be gathered at the cost of enterprise, organization, skill, labor and money, and to be distributed and sold to those who will pay money for it”. Given the “economic value” of the news, a company can have limited proprietary interest in it against a competitor (but not the public) who would attempt to take advantage of the information.[2]
Pitney characterized INS’s behavior as misappropriation. Due to the tenuous value of “hot” news, Pitney narrowed the period for which the proprietary right would apply: this doctrine “postpones participation by complainant’s competitor in the processes of distribution and reproduction of news that it has not gathered, and only to the extent necessary to prevent that competitor from reaping the fruits of complainant’s efforts and expenditure.”[2]

“What goes around comes around.”
That’s right; now they can partake in the miraculous economic boom they’ve been lying to us about for 2 years...
“Hope they are enjoying the obama downturn they refuse to write about.”
Damn straight; in six months these will be the most candid right-wingers you could ever meet.
Nope, Liberals are stuck on stupid
In 6 months, even as their unemployment is running down, they will be over at the Huffington Post writing for free about how dumb Conservatives are
Crap papers produce fewer readers....
My wife and I are heading to the coast for a few days/nights.
I have told the hotel/inn to hold their so called Free USALIES Today and deduct a $ from my bill.
So we will save a couple of bucks and help rid the earth of a worthless lying polluter.
Oh well. Hope those liberal editorialists get the boot first.
