Merciless mocking from Republicans hasn't put President Obama off his focus on the economy, as the White House insisted Thursday that the president is taking "enormously seriously" the hardships Americans are enduring.
"It's patently obvious that the president is focused on the economy, that he takes enormously seriously the hardship that Americans continue to endure," White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said.
Earlier in the week, at a jobs council meeting, the president was called out for saying that "shovel-ready projects' weren't quite as shovel-ready as he thought. Then later, in an interview with NBC News, Obama suggested that innovation and technology -- like job-stealing ATMs -- were reasons why the employment rate was not rebounding as quickly as he had hoped.
"There's some structural issues with our economy where a lot of businesses have learned to become much more efficient with a lot fewer workers," Obama said after being asked about a report that shows businesses were spending 2 percent more on employees since the recession officially ended, but 26 percent more on equipment .
"You see it when you go to a bank and ... you use an ATM, you don't go to a bank teller. Or you go to the airport, and you're using a kiosk instead of checking in at the gate," the president said.
Republicans, who are ratcheting up pressure on Democrats this week by highlighting the first anniversary of what was once dubbed "recovery summer," roasted the president for the comment.
"I didn't do it," read a "guest blog" posted on House Speaker John Boehner's site. The blog was signed by "the Automated Teller Machine (ATM) in your favorite convenience store near the Slurpee Machine."

Fox News is getting as bad as the rest of the MSM. First off, why is it "mockery?" We're voicing serious concern about a man so out of touch with the economy he thinks technology is to blame for the economic malaise, not his policies. If this ignorant luddite refuses to face the reality of what's causing this mess, then we can expect another 2 years, or God forbid 6, of the economy continuing to flounder as he refuses to fix the mess he's made. Our deep concerns on Obama's utter cluelessness about what is ailing the economy rises far above the level of "mockery." Was it "mockery" when the media attacked Palin for her comments on Paul Revere's ride, comments that turned out to be historically correct?? Or was that just "fact checking" as the media likes to call it when a Republican is put into the crosshairs??
Second, since when has Obama "focused" on the economy other than as a talking point?? That man hasn't done anything on the economy this year and even well before that--and prior to that what little he did do just made things worse. He's done nothing but obsessively campaign with an early start that's unprecedented and unseemly.
Please don't tell me we're going to have to start correcting Fox News too.
You see it when you go to a bank and ... you use an ATM, you don’t go to a bank teller. .......................................... Who loads it? Who counts the bills that go into it? Who fixes it when it breaks down? Who moves it? Oh wait, the Genius knows everything, what a brilliant mind.
Bring back newspapers, and put paperboys to work. Banish farm combines look at the thousands of backs put back into sweating on the farm. Outlaw taxis —let a million rickShaws thrive..!
The man looks more stupid with every sun that sets...
He is “enormously seriously” concerned.
This is the same moron that told us to inflate our tires properly to save as much oil as we’d gain by drilling.
- Obama is not smart, it’s a liberal lie claiming Obama is smart.
- Obama could not care less about the average American. In fact, Obama has contempt for the average American.
They took our jorbs,They took our jorbs!!
Barry Soetoro is the least knowledgeable and least experienced attendee at any meeting he chooses to attend on ANY topic, except maybe for community rabble-rousing - but he even failed at that with the Annenberg Project in Chicago with his buddy Billy-the-Bomber.
How soon can the adults be in charge once again?
Yet half the people in this country will vote to re-elect him.
There’s a little man inside most people’s head that make us not say something we were thinking about saying. Just before the words come out the little man yells “Stop. Don’t say it!” There’s nobody living inside obama’s head.
The same little man tells us to admit when we’re wrong. He doesn’t live in liberals’ heads either.
I think we better unionize and send delegates to Washington...

While we are on the subject: Where are the Obama money ATM”S?
He's "enormously seriously" stupid. Off the teleprompter (another machine taking away the job of a human being to THINK!), he's a mental and verbal stumblebum.
We will join you in solidarity.

Translation: The Boy King's policies have made employees a big liability compared to automation.
This idiot does not understand that new technologies creates jobs and wealth. Shall we subsidize 8-track tape manufacturers?
This is the same old anti-Automation bit that the unions have pushed since their movement began. Remember firemen on diesel locomotives?
Somebody fix obama’s teleprompters: “It’s Bush’s fault!”
(Duh! Can’t obama even get THAT straight?)
That’s it; back to the pile for you...
: )
I say we get rid of Obama’s teleprompter and replace it with some guy holding cards on which Obama’s speeches are written. That would give one guy a job at least and Obama can boast that he created 1 million jobs.
“Yet half the people in this country will vote to re-elect him.”
Maybe in 2009; nobody has any reason to vote for him anymore. Every single group is worse off than 3 years ago; it took the public sector a little while to catch up, but they’re getting there. There is simply no reason for anyone to cast a ballot for him; he is a tried & tested failure, who aggravates the matter by demonstrating blatant detachment from Americans in every walk of life.
