He was joking. Everyone laughed. They got the joke. No harm done.
But let’s never hear this joke again, okay, Romney staffers?
Mitt Romney sat at the head of the table at a coffee shop here on Thursday, listening to a group of unemployed Floridians explain the challenges of looking for work. When they finished, he weighed in with a predicament of his own.
I should tell my story, Mr. Romney said. Im also unemployed.
He chuckled. The eight people gathered around him, who had just finished talking about strategies of finding employment in a slow-to-recover economy, joined him in laughter.
Are you on LinkedIn? one of the men asked.
Im networking, Mr. Romney replied. I have my sight on a particular job.…
I wish I had a job for everybody, Mr. Romney said at the end of his discussion. He added, I may be unemployed for longer than Id like.
Any joke about the state of the economy told by a politician is an invitation to disaster. Any joke about the state of the economy told by a politician who’s worth nine figures and is already vulnerable to blue collar/white collar class resentment points to a political death wish. Debbie Downer and the DNC are already trying to make an issue of it, just four days after her own sub-moronic comment about having turned the economy around. They won’t get much traction given all the laughter in the clip, but if one of the voters sitting there with him had freaked out when he said this, the footage would be in constant rotation on cable news tomorrow. He lucked out here, but he won’t always be so lucky. Learn from the mistake.
By the way, if you look carefully, you can already see lefty media memes congealing against Romney just in case he emerges from the field. CNN and Blitzer stick with the evergreen “out of touch” narrative here, but I’ve seen not one, not two, but three different pieces in major publications over the past two days emphasizing his “weirdness” or “awkwardness” on the trail. It’s true, of course, that he’s stiff as a retail politician — that uneasiness feeds into the danger of joking with voters about something as sensitive as unemployment — but I’m curious to see whether they develop it into a full-blown narrative and, if so, how long it takes before it starts showing up as part of their CW in campaign analysis. Think of it as our chance to watch an MSM storyline sprout and grow in real time. It’s a Chia meme!
Try Wal-Mart, Mitt.
You'll probably suck at that, too, but you won't be able to inflict as much damage on our nation.
“I may be unemployed for longer than I’d like.”
I’m hoping that you don’t find a position in the White House.
But I do have millions in the bank .....
What a jacka*s statement.
that's like saying to someone who just lost an arm: “I understand. I have a hangnail.”
Did that table come equipped with simpering idiots or did he have to bring his own?
And let’s hope he stays that way.
Well, since you're so good at it, Mittster, why don't you stay that way a few years longer, mmkay?
You could always try selling Rainbow vacuum cleaners door to door, Millard.
With your glib way of saying exactly what the people in front of you want to hear, you’d be relieving the rubes of $700+ a pop fast and furious.
Back on your feet in no time at all.
What a jackass.
Sorry, I had to clean up my language before I posted that.
Thanks SeekAndFind.
I am profoundly befuddled by how out of touch Romney is with Main Street...It’s clear to me that his staff is working to impress him, not win the election...Does someone in his campaign think that voters will sympathize with him being out of work? And as far as this being humorous, do they think that remark will garner the votes of minority parents who are chronically unemployed? Don’t give me the baloney that he was talking to the audience there...this went national and he expected it would..Can’t the GOP understand that these times and these voters call for a statesperson? Reagan, Thatcher, Churchill, Lincoln...
RE: And Mrs. Bachmann wants to hook her VP wagon to this???
Which reliable news said that she has her ambitions on being Romney’s VP?
No Mitt, you’re not unemployed...YOU’RE TOO STUPID TO WORK.
This is worse than 0 trying to relate.
Mitt, stay unemployed and you’ll do alright.

I’m having trouble understanding why there isn’t a pack of local tea party showing up and shouting down this slick coward SOB Romney from a family of slick cowards in derision every time he speaks in public.
Notice how he only appears in front of hand selected crowds.
His Ceausescu moment is coming (sans the firing squad).
The sooner, the better.
Speaks volumes about the control the socialist media still wields that this phony bastard has the balls to run for the GOP nomination.
Take him down, and then take down the socialists in the press who are pushing him.
unemployed but not broke since he bought a multimillion shack in La Jolla!
