Only 35% of fourth-graders knew the purpose of the Declaration of Independence. The news was even more dire in high school, where 12% of 12th-graders were proficient.

A good definition of “null set” is the contents of an “education” degree.

I've been known to defend teachers on this forum, but you are 100% correct there.

University schools of education should all be abolished, as they are actually worse than useless. They teach concepts and practices that go against reality and common sense.

In my opinion, if you want to teach, say, math, you should have to get a degree in math (not education) then apprentice out to a recognized master math teacher.

The problem isn't their competency at the act of "teaching"(or more accurately: indoctrinating), the problem is with the curriculum which they typically either totally agree with or are not capable of understanding.

There is a sad and profound lack of critical thinking either being encouraged or used in many classrooms in primary schools today.

Their Liberalism is ‘on display’ during the entire interview and hiring process. If these questions are not asked outright, applicants make sure their ‘persuasion’ is evident in their comments, appearance (yes, they LOOK different), their tone, etc.

For example: Haircut-if any, wrinkled shirt (as opposed to crisp, clean one), rumpled tie- if any. For women, large drop earrings with matted tangled hair or butch-cut hair, long dreary colored clothes, also unironed, earth shoes...etc.

See?

“The overall lackluster performance is certain to revive the debate about whether history and other subjects, such as science and art, are being pushed out of the curriculum because of the focus on math and reading demanded under the No Child Left Behind federal education law. The federal law mandates that students be tested in math and reading.”

I suspect that the main problem is spending time on crap like self esteem, anti-bullying tactics, and a totally watered down history curriculum. For example dedicating an entire chapter to MLK and one paragraph to George Washington or summing up WWII as “The U.S. nuked the japanese. Japanese children made peace cranes and died from radiation poisoning.”

Every year I ask my college aged athletes (at one time or the other) three questions:

1) Within 40 years (FOURTY!!!) when was the American Civil War?
2) Name the three "Axis Powers" of WWII
3)What is the significance of June 6th, 1944?

Then I watch the complete BLANK STARES when they try to answer the questions. They can't do it. Most of the athletes can't even get ONE of the questions. These are NOT idiots! These are kids with 3.0-4.0GPS's. Invariably they will say "I never liked history anyway." Hmmmm

I personally don’t blame the teachers themselves. I’ve known many who try to buck the system.

The real fault, as it always is, lies with the local pols, especially Democrats, who roll over for the unions, to save their own butts.

Several hundred teachers, voting as a block, can mean a HUGE shift in a local election, and even for state house elections, especially primaries.

And a wanna-be career politician is going to be very wary of getting on their wrong side. so, you buy them off, keep’em happy, and move on to the next level. leaving the problems you created for someone else’s headache.

When they interview there are code questions. Mrs. Mad served on a school board for years and was appalled by the blatant use of code in the interview process.

When I was a kid we about 30 to 35 kids per class and we learned. However, trouble makers were disciplined and if that failed, thrown out of school. They weren’t allowed to disrupt class.
Real discipline hasn’t been allowed in at least 25 years.

For several years, in one medium-sized Indiana city, you COULD NOT GET HIRED to teach, unless you were very liberal, or very gay.

Of course, if you pointed that fact out, you were a hater and a bigot.

... so my question is, how do they test for liberalism?

Secret handshake?

We need more private schools that are accessible to middle/low income families. There are schools that cater to ‘the arts’. We need schools that cater to freedom, character, and Christian values.

Here is a more serious problem. If you don’t know the history of your country, it’s struggles and sacrifices, problems, defeats and victories, how can you love her? If you don’t love your country you will not have alliegance towards her, and you certainly will not sacrifice for her.
That’s how they want it.

Teachers who know their stuff, who like to teach, and who know what is essential to good education should form national and local co-ops where they are able to visit different private classrooms on a regular basis. They could run circles around public education on half the budget and have fun doing it.

Can someone get me a list on how the teachers union defines the curriculum and what is taught?

I sincerely hope the sample questions weren’t some of the more difficult ones. Several of them required only fairly straightforward logic.

I agree. I think the ignoring of history is a deliberate act by libs to get students to think America is just another country in the world. No special past and no special future. The libs want some sort of alliance with a united liberal world where we willingly take orders from some lib bureaucrats located on the other side of the planet.
