NATO refuses to rule out bombing Libyan Roman ruins

NATO can not verify rebel claims that Gadhafi may be hiding rockets at the UNESCO World Heritage site of Leptis Magna.

NATO refused to say Tuesday whether it would bomb ancient Roman ruins in Libya if it knew Moammar Gadhafi was hiding military equipment there.

"We will strike military vehicles, military forces, military equipment or military infrastructure that threaten Libyan civilians as necessary," a NATO official in Naples, Italy, said, declining to give his name in discussing internal NATO deliberations.

But he said the alliance could not verify rebel claims that Libya's leader may be hiding rocket launchers at the UNESCO World Heritage site of Leptis Magna, a Roman city between the capital of Tripoli and rebel-held Misrata.

Wing Cmdr. Mike Bracken, a spokesman for NATO's Libya mission, later said it "would be a concern for us that Gadhafi and pro-Gadhafi forces would choose to contravene international law in hiding themselves in such a location."

And, he said, "If we were to take on any targets, we would consider all risks." But he underscored that NATO could not confirm that weapons might be placed at the heritage site.

The Bracken briefing came a day after a top British military officer acknowledged that the bombing campaign was straining British resources.

If we haven’t had any qualms bombing his grandchildren to death, I can’t see a pile of old stones making much difference, as valuable as they are to history.

And why not? NATO is assisting jihadists, who have proven to be vandals everywhere.

Amazing how one administration can put a nation so quickly on the wrong side of history.

Roman ruins are inconsequential to the Caliphate.

An additional thought: Zero might be wanting some of those columns as stage props for his traveling campaign / snake oil sales tour.

Gee, when is NATO going to bomb Syria to protect those civilians from their mass murdering dictator? Oh, right. The Europeans get most of their oil from Libya, so priceless Roman ruins be damned.

What the Vandal invaders left intact 1600 years ago, the new barbarians will destroy.

Disgusting.

Muslims could care less about Roman ruins, except for the tourist dollars they bring in. But you might think that NATO would know better.

Maybe there are worse things to worry about, but I am worried about the antiquities in North Africa. The only reason why the Muslims who ruled Egypt didn’t destroy all those antique statues is that they were safely buried under the sand. Now they are out in the open, ready to be destroyed like so many other remnants of the ancient civilizations that preceded these barbarians.

If they would blow up ancient statues of Buddha, they would also likely blow up statues of the old Egyptian Pharoahs, since human images violate Muslim teachings. The antiquities in Egypt were not really dug up until after the Caliphate had fallen. But I don’t trust them to what is coming.

Far worse if NATO sets the example. And for what?

These ruins - majestic, historical. survived over 2,000 years - and this regime would have NO qualms destroying it. Scum. Tells any sane person all one needs to know.

Name ANYthing being built today that will still have one stone left upon another 2,000 years from now.

The Romans had no problem with destroying Jerusalem so I’m not going to lose any sleep if we have to bomb a bunch of old Roman bricks.

When thinking of history and islam, one only has to view an islamic nation. Death and destruction everywhere the eye can see unless there is an iron hand at play. islam understands only the iron hand, and in the case of the Roman ruins why would islam treat any past culture with respect, for it is not of islam? NATO and the zer0, zer0 the head of the beast. This is a fantasy time in history where past reality becomes unlikely to survive. Pray I am wrong, I do every day.

Much ado about nothing. Of course they’re not going to commit to leaving the site alone.

I highly doubt they’d actually bomb it, but they’re not going to say that.

let the people kill each other!
I mean serious who cares?
And spend the money to keep the survivours out of the country.
This is how i want to see my tax money at work!
Ok will never happen but this is the way it should be.
We spend money to kill people there (because bombs don´t grow on trees) and then we spend money to “invite” the same people living next to us!
The world has gone crazy.
We kill taliban and then we give asylum to the very same people for free.

Libya arguably has the most intact Roman Ruins on the planet and NATO says they would bomb them for Obamas pointless war.
