Physicists say sunspot cycle is 'going into hibernation'
What may be the science story of the century is breaking this evening, as heavyweight US solar physicists announce that the Sun appears to be headed into a lengthy spell of low activity, which could mean that the Earth far from facing a global warming problem is actually headed into a mini Ice Age.
The announcement made on 14 June (18:00 UK time) comes from scientists at the US National Solar Observatory (NSO) and US Air Force Research Laboratory. Three different analyses of the Sun's recent behaviour all indicate that a period of unusually low solar activity may be about to begin.
The Sun normally follows an 11-year cycle of activity. The current cycle, Cycle 24, is now supposed to be ramping up towards maximum strength. Increased numbers of sunspots and other indications ought to be happening: but in fact results so far are most disappointing. Scientists at the NSO now suspect, based on data showing decades-long trends leading to this point, that Cycle 25 may not happen at all.
This could have major implications for the Earth's climate. According to a statement issued by the NSO, announcing the research:
An immediate question is whether this slowdown presages a second Maunder Minimum, a 70-year period with virtually no sunspots [which occurred] during 1645-1715.

Our burning of fossil fuel somehow affected the sun and now we will suffer.
Doesn’t that just freeze your cahonies knowing it is our fault and we were warned by the loony left and it somehow they turned out to be correct.
I just want to see how the scientist from the left can explain how our usage of ANYTHING on earth cause the sun to go dormant.
If that happened then we don’t have to worry by that time none of us will be here..It would however be nice to get some cool weather it has been hot as blazes here for a while..I would go for an ice age or two right now..LOL!
ManBearPig will try and convince the public that man's carbon emissions are upsetting the sun. The sad thing is many in the media would believe him.
Meanwhile, solar activity over the past two weeks has taken a dive, even from the modest levels of this cycle:
GLOBAL WARMING~!!!
Climate scientists (along with most of us) need to learn to be more humble.
As for those who have been using “global warming” to push for totalitarianism and world government, they should just SHUT UP and GO AWAY!!!!
Sunspot Baby, She sure has a real good time.
Actually it’s all about Al Gore and others getting rich off a scam on the public.

Skis for everyone!
I say that boy is so dumb (ie Obozo) he thinks a pig pen is something to write with.
Sorry - George Soros has other plans:
A bill encouraging the use of natural-gas-powered vehicles will give the EPA authority to regulate greenhouse gases while rewarding the Democratic left's patron saint. See the thread A Bill To Make Soros Richer
I wonder if a sunspot might actually be created on the Sun, resulting in some instability that might produce more sunspots.
That is, assuming a very calm Sun has caused an acute ice age, if a spaceship could be launched with the equivalent of a 1,000MT nuclear bomb on board (the largest nuke ever built was the Tsar Bomba, at 100MT, though limited to only 50MT when tested).
Granted, the spaceship would not get very close to the Sun before melting, but the purpose of the nuke would be to create an immense magnetic field close (within millions of kilometers) to the Sun, with an electromagnetic pulse.
Doing so might create a “dent” in the magnetic field of the corona that might reverberate enough to affect the internal magnetic field of the Sun.
Quick, everyone rev your engines and fart all you can.
An immediate question is whether this slowdown presages a second Maunder Minimum, a 70-year period with virtually no sunspots [which occurred] during 1645-1715.
Early records of sunspots indicate that the Sun went through a period of inactivity in the late 17th century. Very few sunspots were seen on the Sun from about 1645 to 1715. Although the observations were not as extensive as in later years, the Sun was in fact well observed during this time and this lack of sunspots is well documented. This period of solar inactivity also corresponds to a climatic period called the "Little Ice Age" when rivers that are normally ice-free froze and snow fields remained year-round at lower altitudes. There is evidence that the Sun has had similar periods of inactivity in the more distant past.
