The Maunder Minimum coincided with the height of the Northern Hemisphere's "Little Ice Age" 1600-1800. Has anybody consulted the Goreacle about this?

To read spaceweather.com you’ld think the sun was in overdrive. Maybe this is the start of removing politics from science but I doubt it.

Here in Houston, we are supposed to have temps of at least 100°F all this week and for the foreseeable future, with no rain in sight. Bring on the next “little ice age”!

We are all going to die!!!!!!

Uh, seriously.....

We ARE all going to die. So have a good time. This life is just part of the adventure. The good thing is that there is more to follow.

Henrik Svensmark first proposed a mechanism by which the sun spot cycle could induce global warming and cooling. The variation in the sun’s magnetosphere correlates with sunspot activity; the more sunspots, the higher the magnetic field. The higher magnetic field deflects more of the high-energy cosmic rays which lead to greater cloud formation. As the sunspots wane and along with it the solar magnetosphere, high-energy cosmic rays penetrate more frequently and deeply into the Earth’s atmosphere and create more clouds which reflects sunlight back into space, causing the Earth to cool.

The theory now seems to be widely accepted as this article demonstrates, but Svensmark was attacked and ostracized for daring to challenge the conventional wisdom.

We have 20+ years of AGW predictions with a 100 per cent failure rate by the fraudsters like Jones, Hansen, Mann, etc., but we have a model that is now successfully predicting climate variation. The sun indicates that things are going to turn very cold.

Bwahaha! Here's what the libtards had to say back in 2009 about a Maunder Minimum.

National Solar Observatory, NASA say no “Maunder Minimum” —sorry, deniers —Solar Cycle 24 poised to rev up

The deniers have been rooting for a Maunder Minimum to stifle global warming (which it wouldn’t have done anyway, see here). But human-caused global warming is so strong that not bloody much stifling has been going on given that “this will be the hottest decade in recorded history by far,” nearly 0.2°C warmer than the 1990s. Heck, even with a La Ni±a and an unusually inactive sun, 2008 was almost 0.1°C warmer than the decade of the 1990s as a whole —and of course the 1990s were, at the time, the hottest decade in recorded history. Changes in the sun just ain’t the big dog anymore when it comes to driving climate change (see here).

It's hard to believe, but Al “millions of degrees” Gore is trotting out the long dead corpse of the AGW scam yet again!

It's totally amazing to me that there are about 10% of people on the Internet that still worship Gore and the insane notions of his carbon credit profiteering friends.

Still harder to believe, large numbers of Leftists on Answerbag continue to promote the global warming/peanut latte induced temperature alteration nonsense with great vigor. This is one of the reasons that I don't go there anymore.

Here's a sunspot chart showing the various peaks and dips throughout the past centuries. Note the "Medieval Max". It corresponds to the "Medieval Warm Period". The "Maunder Minimum" corresponds to the "Little Ice Age", and the "Modern Max" to the recent warming trend we had been experiencing, at least until the past 15 years or so.

"Changes in carbon-14 concentration in the Earth's atmosphere, which serves as a long term proxy of solar activity. Note the present day is on the left-hand side of this figure."

Of course, with falling average temperatures, many will move to the US Southwest. But like all good things today, buying groceries will be a thing of the past. Falling average temps mean record crop failures and food shortages everywhere.

Hot is endurable (with A/C), but cold and the associated starvation will kill many people as it did in the Little Ice Age.

Be careful what you wish for...

Fascinating stuff...there are a lot of scientific assets, including a couple of long term satellites (SOHO has been running for near 13 years now...) and we’ve got more data coming in on what the sun is actually up to than has ever been available before. When you start to consider the enormous scale and power involved with these events it just boggles the mind...

Smithsonian Magazine just ran a great article about the sun...well worth a read, and be sure to check out the photo galleries....
