Prospective presidential candidate Michele Bachmann says she wants a national sales tax, but cant vote for it because she believes Congress would just add it to the current income tax system.
In a profile in The Wall Street Journal, Bachmann says she loves the FAIR tax proposal but just cannot bring herself to back it in the House.
If we were starting over from scratch, I would favor a national sales tax," the three-term Minnesota congresswoman says. But the reality is that if it were enacted, the chances are we would end up with a dual tax, a national sales tax and an income tax."
Bachmann says her tax plan would be to take corporate rates down from 35 percent to nine percent and zero out capital gains tax, the alternative minimum tax and the death tax.
But she says the main problem with the U.S. tax system is that nearly half the population pays nothing. She says all deductions should be abolished because there is no tie to the government benefits that people demand.
Everyone should have to pay something," she insists.

17, 22 and 7 pieces of legislation sponsored, none of which having become law.
No significant committee assignments
No leadership position within the party.
Not so sure the good people of her district are getting their monies worth.
It is really no more complicated than that. Lots of talk, but nothing substantive has come from it.
Just what we need: another ****ing tax. :(
Also I’d love to know Palin’s legislative accomplishments besides sticking it to ‘big oil’.
Then sometimes they look like a bad episode of Survivor with participants deciding on who the target of the evening should be.
Ain’t gonna happen, Joe. I agree with Bachmann on this. Those crafty congresscritters might reduce a tax or two in exchange for a sales tax, but they aren’t going to get rid of an income tax. It gives them too much power to regulate everybody.
You still flying?
I think with Cain, Gingrich and Bachmann in the debates they'll be far from boring. The first debate in SC that Fox had was not boring.
It really was embarrassing watching her try to explain to a CNN type a couple of months ago why she should be considered a serious candidate in light of the 1/2 dozen or so of her whoppers she was presented with from the floor of the House of Representatives.
I have been a fan of Mr. Cain for a long time. He would probably be worth my time.
Newt is a blow hard who lost his relevance a long time ago.
I have seen the conservatives for Palin -only- on this site find something wrong with everybody but Palin. As... Palin does not even debate.
I like both Palin and Bachmann but will defend the tea party conservatives (Bachmann,Cain) that the Palin bots bash because of their Palin worship. Palin is not the boss of the tea party she was not there first and independents and fiscal democrats are in the tea party tent not just Palin supporters. Those that proclaim on this forum many times they will write her in even if she does not run better like more Obama or a Romney.
As I said in a previous post all of this primary tea party infighting is useless as I have a gut notion Perry will get the nomination like it or not.
Until then why bash Bachmann. I bash Palin because she is not even announcing or debating and do not hold out like a dummy for any secret plan like others here.
She’s the real deal.
You can make great arguments for both the flat tax and the fair tax, but the Democrat opponent is going to go out and flood the airwaves with ads saying you want to “slap a 23% tax on everything you buy. On bread, milk, gas and medicine”. And you never get the chance to explain the upside of your plan because the sheeple swallow that hook, line and sinker.
At least that’s how it played out in PA 12. I had hoped for better but was badly disappointed by how effective that was.
Illegal aliens? You mean undocumented foreign nationals?
I don’t think it is as much toward Palin as it is to those who try to force others to think their way. Not a single one of the potentials has a record of total perfection. I don’t try to force people to only support Bachmann by personally attacking them or pinging the boss if they disagree. Folks have a right to support who they wish. There is room for both of these gals to debate and campaign. I welcome it. Truth is, neither has entered the race and neither will win sitting it out.
This is what the source of the trouble is. Like it or not.
None of these people are perfect, they are just people like we are.
I’m cool with the idea. Just got a few more major things to buy, and I’ll be set for retirement.
At some point I will give her and the rest of the pack a “fair” tax solution that is not a consumption/sales tax (very regressive), can eliminate the direct personal income tax (with all its credits, re-distributions and exemptions), would be low, would not discriminate by source of income or penalize any source of income.
But so far I own it (am the only one who acknowledges the possibility), so end of statement.
I would prefer a national sales tax, because even a flat tax taxes only those that have a repoted income where a national sales tax would aslo include those working under the table, drug dealers bookies etc because it would tax them when they spend it not when they earn it, my concern would be that they keep the income tax and just add the national sales tax not replace the income tax with the sales tax
I agree with you, and I think such a proposal should be in the form of an amendment to the constitution that would eliminate the income tax and also require a balanced budget except in the case of a national emergency.
Yep.
I live at FL37
Field is dry as Kansas wheat but tomorrow I’ll go do two landings and breakfast at Okeechobee and eat breakfast then fly around the lake do a touch n go at Pahoke then home in the hanger by 9.
11:30 I’ll be sailing in Stuart sound.
Life’s good
I agree with you that we must repeal the 16th Amendment before looking for a National Sales Tax or a Value Added Tax. But one can have a Flat Income tax of 20%.
Any Fair Tax discussion I have ever read/heard included both Prebates and continued deductions for certain “classes”. Eliminate these and I could get more behind the Fair Tax. Either the Fair or Flat Tax is better than what we have now.
Nice overreaction dude.
