(CNSNews.com) - CIA Director Leon Panetta, who President Barack Obama has nominated to be secretary of Defense, told the Senate Armed Services Committee on Thursday that he believes the president can unilaterally use military force, without congressional authorization to protect our national interests.
Panettas claim of broad unilateral presidential power to initiate U.S. military action absent an attack or imminent threat to the United States came in response to a question from Sen. John McCainwho said he agreed with Panetta.
The U.S. is now involved militarily in Libya even though Congress has never authorized that involvement.

how about some HEARINGS on libya?
Before the revolt, Hadn't Bush cowed Qaddafi into behaving himself?
So what would happen if they used the same reasoning in the USA? Protecting national interest say in downtown Boston or NYC?
Where are all the Dems that grandstandingly whined about Bush?............................
They can’t talk because they have their mouths full of.....
And of course “national interests” are whatever the President says they are. Pretty short step to rationalizing martial law on the same basis.
I’m guessing that if we dig deep enough, they will claim that its the Commerce Clause that lets the president do this. They seem to think the Commerce Clause lets them do anything and everything.
Would that include against Americans also?
Weiner?.............
Oh yeah...Panetta is such a legal genius.

Why? To listen to the excuses for why they defied the Constitution and violated the law? A waste of time. The weak, effete, Republican elite were, again, the partners of the liberals in the defiling of our Country.
Anyone asking whose going to protect us from Obama? The silence out of DC and this Congress is deafening!
So, Bush in Iraq and A’stan is an “illegal war” but Obama’s attack on Linya and other nations is “Unilaterally Use Military to Protect National Interests”?
Communists are liars.
So Obama and Panetta vindicate Nixon, Reagan, and both Bushes. All said the WPA was unconstitutional and void. Nice of them to finally admit it.
Maybe it’s in our “national interest” to prop up the president and create the impression of an adored leader - while struggling with this global economy and three wars.
Maybe we can silence these annoying conservatives all in the name of our “national interests.”
These people need to be impeached.
Why? Just to shine a light on what this guy (Barry) is doing. He loves using chicago style politics, but HATES being questioned.
When you question King Barry, he gets irate at being questioned, and he get mad. When he gets mad, he is not likeable. Shine the light on this thug.
