When Army Sergeant First Class Leroy A. Petry receives the Medal of Honor from President Obama next month, the Santa Fe resident will have to make sure the batteries are recharged for the prosthetic right hand he extends to friends and strangers alike.
Although custom prohibits medal winners from speaking publicly in advance of their receipt of the honor, three of Petrys Army Ranger comrades held a news conference in Seattle Thursday to recount his extraordinary heroism and selfless sacrifice in the line of duty.

I do not have words that would be adequate to express my respect for this man.
There are few like him...and the vast majority of those appear to be in the military.
God bless them all.
Thank you for posting some good news.
It is people like Sgt. Petry who keep me from being totally depsondent about the future of our country. As long as men like him are still supporting and defending our Constitution, it gives me hope that the United States can save itself from perishing on the ash-heap of history.
He makes us all proud.
The author is unaware that a sergeant is not an officer and that one does not ‘win’ the medal of honor. Is there any journalist with an IQ greater than 70 these days?
Thank you for your service Sgt. Petry.

God Bless— a true hero
The man is a true enough all American hero. So deserving. Go Army.
This generation of warriors deserves the same credit as those that have gone before them. What makes this generation truley remarkable is the fact that they are all volunteers. They enlisted knowing full well they would see combat in some of the worst shiiteholes the world can offer.
I am humbled to have had the honor of serving with these remarkable men and women.
Beg to differ slightly. A sergeant is a noncommissioned (i.e., enlisted) OFFICER, as distinguished from a commissioned OFFICER.
For some reason I always think of Wayne’s World, in that I should bow down saying “We’re not worthy!” Individually we really aren’t, but thankfully the heroes do it anyway.
What really gets me is how they don’t let this get to their head. I’ve met an MOH recipient (Bruce Crandall) and a DSC recipient (David Cooper), and the regular-guy modesty was impressive. Maybe it’s because a true hero doesn’t do it for the award, it was just a job that needed to be done.
It is too bad that a hero of his magnitude is forced to receive his medal from a communist wimp who wants to destroy Our Country.
Bump!
(Or as we used to say it, back in the day: "Rangers Need a Lay")
Thanks for the ping Dave.
