Texas Governor Rick Perry is "serious" about making a run for the White House, sources close to Perry tell CBS News.

Perry has been talking with financial backers for the past week on a possible bid and even held a conference call earlier in the week to discuss the matter, the sources told CBS' Jan Crawford.

But Perry was reluctant to run for the nomination without key advisers, including his former campaign manager Rob Johnson and his top political consultant Dave Carney, both of whom were working on the presidential campaign of former House Speaker Newt Gingrich.

Those guys just quit Newt so maybe he is running. Too bad, I don’t like him and have had enough of Texas Governors.

The last one was bad enough.

Same. This is why I am cool towards this guy. That, and a strong sense that he is utterly insincere. Attentive and glib, yes, but insincere.

I think if Perry decides to run Palin will not. He’s the only one I’ve seen Palin demonstrate much enthusiasm about when talking about potential candidates.

I’d rather have someone more conservative(like Palin), but after Bachmann’s choice of Ed Rollins as an advisor and after Herman Cain’s goofy “I won’t sign any bill longer than 3 pages” statement, those two have fallen quite a bit on my list of favored candidates. I’m also hesitant to support either of those because I’m not sure Bachmann or Cain could beat Obama. If Perry runs and Palin doesn’t, I’ll support him. Definitely don’t want Mitt and I think Perry would beat him for the nomination. And beat Obama.

Just one question. We've been hearing for a couple of months that Palin wasn't running since she had no organization established. Applying that same logic, how can Perry be jumping in and running?

“From a Texas conservative - NO THANK YOU.”

Why, Windflier? I always appreciate your analyses, and Perry has always struck me as a bit of a construct. However, I am too remote from Texas now to have a firm take on him. Give us your take, please.

Good God, we agree on something. Stop the presses. I don’t want to see a Pan American Corridor either.

What does it say about their political acumen if these advisers hitched their wagons to Newt? Doesn’t that so much as say “we’re clueless”?

It would take seventy or eighty years at that for either of those two to accumulate the sort of Negatives Perry has earned during his time as Governor.

If the Republicans run Perry, I am likely to be voting Cain.

If Palin and Rush Limbaugh are in Perry's corner, he must have something going for him.

I guess I need to look at him more carefully, but my impression of him is that he’s “Texas Mitt”; a RINO with good hair and a charming smile.

His immigration stand doesn’t do it for me. How is he on the 2nd amendment?

Palin’s still my first choice, but she’s always seemed to be fairly positive on Perry. Texan FReepers seem to give him a pretty rough time, but from what I can tell from his record, he’s an experienced guy who’s done a decent job running Texas. The state seems to be in good financial shape, better than the others. He’d be a credible opponent against Imam Ubama and his Mini Mitt.

If Palin’s not running, and it’s between Mitt and Perry, or Perry and Obama, then it’s really no choice at all.
