The whole polygamy thing on Joseph Smith's part was an attempt to reduce the risk of scandal. He wanted to cheat on his wife Emma with some pretty young thing, so he claimed divine revelation from God commanding him to have more than one wife. Joseph Smith was so “obedient” to God that he managed to acquire at least 33 of them.
