Was all that necessary?

Who was the guy that said "Sell your cloak and buy a sword"? Oh, yeah, Jesus.

“I will sing to the LORD, for he is highly exalted. The horse and its rider he has hurled into the sea. The LORD is my strength and my song; he has become my salvation. He is my God, and I will praise him, my father's God, and I will exalt him. The LORD is a warrior; the LORD is his name. Pharaoh's chariots and his army he has hurled into the sea. The best of Pharaoh's officers are drowned in the Red Sea. The deep waters have covered them; they sank to the depths like a stone.

“Your right hand, O LORD, was majestic in power. Your right hand, O LORD, shattered the enemy. In the greatness of your majesty you threw down those who opposed you. You unleashed your burning anger; it consumed them like stubble. By the blast of your nostrils the waters piled up. The surging waters stood firm like a wall; the deep waters congealed in the heart of the sea.

“The enemy boasted, ‘I will pursue, I will overtake them. I will divide the spoils; I will gorge myself on them. I will draw my sword and my hand will destroy them.’ But you blew with your breath, and the sea covered them. They sank like lead in the mighty waters.

“Who among the gods is like you, O LORD? Who is like you—majestic in holiness, awesome in glory, working wonders? You stretched out your right hand and the earth swallowed them.

“In your unfailing love you will lead the people you have redeemed. In your strength you will guide them to your holy dwelling. The nations will hear and tremble; anguish will grip the people of Philistia. The chiefs of Edom will be terrified, the leaders of Moab will be seized with trembling, the people of Canaan will melt away; terror and dread will fall upon them. By the power of your arm they will be as still as a stone— until your people pass by, O LORD, until the people you bought pass by. You will bring them in and plant them on the mountain of your inheritance— the place, O LORD, you made for your dwelling, the sanctuary, O Lord, your hands established. The LORD will reign for ever and ever.”

I wonder how many of those who signed the above would be offended by the above song?

Never before have so many Christians, including pastors, priests, laypersons and theologians from around the world, so clearly stated that nationalist songs of this sort have no place in Christian formation.

Betcha they'd have no problem at all with a global, one world, kumbaya anthem and pledging allegiance to the UN flag. Heck, this bunch of fools would probably have no problem with bowing to Mecca 5x/day.

I bet you would be wrong. I have talked to a few kids at Bible School who have never read the Song of Moses and Miriam and are appalled by the violent language when they do read it.

Nothing like making it difficult to find the first post!

Never heard of Goshen College, so went to the its website. There is a claim they have NOT banned the National Anthem, that there has been a lot of mis-reporting in the press. It seems the Board advanced the petition and wanted more info from the college president ... it seems to be from Facebook and that’s all the info I could glean.

They should try looking at the lyrics to the French national anthem if they want bloodthirsty lyrics...

He also said this:

Matthew 10:34 (NIV)
“Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword.

I can’t get over the irony of the date of their decision, June 6th. On June 6th 1944 thousands of free men were slaughtered on the beaches at Normandy trying to free an enslaved Europe so that people could be free to live and worship (or not) in any way they chose. The world, including here, would be a far differrent place had they failed.

It’s one thing to be a pacifist it’s quite another to be an ingrate.

We might be surprised how many people listed above are on our side when it comes to conservative principles. My first instinct upon hearing this is that we’re dealing with a bunch of Commies and liberal asshats. A more-informed perspective may reveal a group of people who love our Country, but do not worship it; who are willing, able, and happy to excercise the freedoms granted here, but refrain from using force to bring something into the world that God has bestowed in the first place.

We should not make our National Anthem compulsory at sporting events, nor should we make the Pledge of Allegiance compulsory, for that in itself would mitigate the very idea of being a free people, would it not?

The above being said, I’ve never been offended by the fact that a free country cannot be such without real fights and battles of flesh and blood, nor do I shrink in the least from either singing the National Anthem or saying the Pledge of Allegiance. For our convictions to be honest, however, a certain amount of civility and latitude must extend toward those who express reservations under the circumstances.

In short, this is a stange case where the battle seems plain on the face of it, but it may not be so.

Cordially,

-FC

Normandy...this baby-boomer would love to visit that hallowed ground someday. Any time I think about seeing it in person, I picture myself falling to my knees and crying. The sacrifice of that day by great and good nations is being quickly forgotten.
