THE HAGUE (BNO NEWS) -- Dutch, British and Danish fighter jets on Tuesday morning intercepted two Russian bombers which had crossed into Dutch airspace, the Dutch Ministry of Defense said. It is the third such incident this year.
A statement from the Dutch Defense ministry said two F-16 aircraft took off from Volkel Air Base on Tuesday to intercept two Russian Tupolev Tu-95 aircraft, which are large, four-engine strategic bombers and missile platforms. They are also known as Bears, its NATO reporting name.
"The Russians flew into the Dutch area of responsibility without making their identity known," the Dutch ministry said. "Combat leaders of the Air Operations Controls Station Nieuw Milligen gave the Dutch F-16s the order to approach the Bears."
The ministry said the F-16s intercepted the Russian aircraft when they entered airspace of which the Netherlands has the responsibility under NATO. The fighter jets followed the Russian planes until they left Dutch airspace, northwest of the city of Leeuwarden.
According to the Dutch government, fighter jets of the British and Danish air forces were already following the Russian bombers before they entered Dutch airspace. It was not clear if the Russian bombers had also flown into British or Danish airspace.

Should have blasted them out of the air, just like the Russkies did to KAL 007.
Agree.
Those are them BIG SOBs.
Ruskies like to make big craft. This one is interesting because it is a turboprop. The B-52 has about double the capacity and about the same speed.
I know it would have been emotionally satisfying to splash it, but I mean, the Dutch pulled 'em over. Does it get better than that?

Despite have a nuclear bully to the east, Europeans still want to completely dismantle their militaries.

The ussr ain’t todays russia and such s*it can happen if you have a nervous finger on the trigger. See Iran Air Flight 655.
Russia needs to put a Tom Tom on their bombers, they frequently get lost.
Wow -- I went back and double checked and all the Google images say it is a Tu-95. There are a lot of other pics that look pretty similar.
Maybe I was mislead? I am doing straight google-fu "in the blind."
But here is another pic that suggests the Tu-95 might be a BIT older than the one I posted:
Even if it is a Fokker in a Messerschmidt, you have to admit it is really interesting looking...
But thanks, I would rather be wrong and corrected than just wander along being wrong.
Particularly given my love of mil craft in all variations.
The Tu-142 was updated late model lenghtened fuselage version of the Tu-95 for ASW work.
When the Soviets brought out the cruise missile carrying Bear H, it was originally going to be a Tu-142 (the new school) instead of a Tu-95 (the old school), until someone checked the wording of the SALT treaty and found that would make all Tu-142s treaty birds (including the ASW ones).
>>It’s a Tu-142. The MAD sting at the top of the fin gives it away.

That is really interesting. Thanks for the info and I hope you don’t get upset (and DO chortle) when I tell someone who makes the same Google search I did “hey, that isn’t a Tu-95! What was you thinking?”
Information is always a good thing and a little fun along the ways makes it better :)
BTW — was my latter pic an accurate Tu-95? It does look, let us say, clunkier, than the original Tu-142 pic I posted.
Ping list ping.
I’d be really curious to know exactly where these guys showed up in the “Dutch area of responsibility”, wherever that is.
glass nose Tu-142 (gotta be as those were the only Bears the Indians flew)
solid nose Tu-95 Bear H
The latter pic appears to be a Tu-95. It has better be as that is what the Museum calls it hereTupolev Tu-95 'Bear' 4807 Monino Museum
Glass nose says original model Bear A. No apparent gun turrets would suggest it was one of those converted to a Tu-95U trainer in the 70s.
The strategic bomber version is very similar, but I believe it had a gun in the tail with bubble glass. A picture of one caught flying near Alaska during the cold war, you could see the rear gunner in the window.
It’s a cold war relic and it’s embarrassing Russia pulls this crap from time to time to thump it’s chest. The plane would last seconds against any modern fighter or surface to air missile defense.
