GM CEO calls for $1 gas tax hike
CNN ^ | June 7 2011 | By Chris Isidore

General Motors CEO Dan Akerson said his company and his industry would be helped, not hurt, if consumers paid higher gas taxes.

In an interview published in Tuesday's Detroit News, Akerson floated the idea of a $1 a gallon increase in the gas tax as a way to encourage buyers to purchase smaller, more fuel efficient cars. Greg Martin, spokesman for GM's Washington office, confirmed that the quotes reflect Akerson's and GM's view.

Akerson said he would support a jump in the gas tax if it came instead of tighter fuel economy regulations that GM (GM, Fortune 500) and other automakers will have to meet in coming years. By the year 2025, automakers could be forced to hit fuel economy averages of as much as 62 mpg.

Akerson said that a higher gas tax, including an immediate 50-cent-a-gallon increase to take advantage of recent declines in gas prices, would probably make some of his Republican friends "puke." But he said it would do more to help the environment than the pending fuel economy rules.

“The government controls the efficiency of many things:”

You say that like you are a fan. Oh wait, you are a fan. Show me in the constitution where the Feds are authorized to control the efficiency of many things.

Ahh, the classic fall back ad hominem...”I don’t agree with you, therefore, I’m not “reasonable”.

“Normal” for me is the FORD F-150 TRUCK that I drive.

You can choose to do your part, but you have absolutely NO right to FORCE me, via the stinkin’ corrupt government, to do something at your behest because you find me “unreasonable”.

That’s a STATIST point of view.

“and all of my life I have been a GM ONLY man. Never again.”

I don’t know, I’d still consider buying a BO (Before obuma) Corvette with a slinky, green-eyed redhead in the shotgun seat. But I’m broke now, so what you said...

Dan Akerson's house:

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

According to Virtual Globetrotting, this is the Virginia home of Dan Akerson, the current head of GM and former head of the Carlyle Group and a director at American Express.

I don't know if he also has a home in Detroit, that gleaming city that is the headquarters of GM.

Dan, as you can see, lives in a humble place...except, well, I don't see any solar panels. And I wonder how much he spends on electricity for that mansion every month... Probably more than I spend in an entire year.

Yeah, Dan, let's charge ME a dollar more per gallon.

Elitist.

Who the hell are you to dictate consumption?

Preach your obstinate elitism elsewhere.

Those large trucks and SUVs are using twice the fuel of a normal car, and most are not needed regardless of all the camping stories, hauling neighbor's crap, etc. Twice the fuel means oil runs our twice as quick and twice as much pollution no matter how you slice it or dice it.

What if you only drive your SUV half as much as a Prius driver? Who is more PC?

How can a CEO not know that would finish off the economy?

Depends on the meaning of CEO. In this case, it's not what you think it is, but rather Communist Elitist Overlord

I agree... I just hope someone buys Corvette. I have owned several and I love the cars. I have a 78 Anniversary left. gm does not deserve such a car.

If I had any doubts before about my decision, I’m positive now. F*** General Motors. I will never, ever, buy a new GM car.

I know conservatives balk at this idea, but there are only two ways to get people to [do something they don't want to do]

Yes, we know already. Impose Tyranny and Coercion. Judging by your comments, you have already surrendered to the idea that the Government Knows Best and the Free Market is a total failure.

I am usually not for government regulations, but...
There always is that one last little law that tyrants want to impose on their fellow Americans that promises us all Utopia - and it is always the same kind of law - one that rejects the Constitution, diminishes freedom and costs us more money.
I see lots of people driving huge SUVs and trucks who do not need them

Because you are omniscient and merely my glancing at a total stranger, in a split second, can plan their entire lives out for them, knowing instantly everything about them, all of their needs and desires, then say "you don't need ____ according to my snap judgment." and then gleefully expect the State to use all of their police powers to enforce your wisdom to make sure that your neighbor can't ever have ____.

Next week will you come back and say "You don't need to have your own personal motor vehicle for you have public transit here." Simply pay more taxes and sacrifice your liberties because deprivation, control and shared misery is the only thing the "you don't need ___" cabal has to offer. More restrictions, more penalties, more taxes, more fines, more slavery, more misery all in the name of what? If you hate American ideals and hate the idea that God made us Free to pursue life, liberty, happiness/property, then maybe you are in the wrong culture and should go live with those who enjoy oppressing their neighbor by imposing strangling demands. The world is full of Do-Gooders who feel that their One Size Fits All regulations for some imaginary and contrived benefit is the way to perpetual Universal Good. (The Taliban comes to mind)

Sell your hate for your neighbor and love of tyranny elsewhere.

I wonder how big his house is...or what temp he keeps it at.

I don’t think he needs that big of a house, that takes up a lot of land and resources.

Nor do I think he should keep his house cooled to 72 degrees (that’s a WASTE of energy).

Slippery slope this guy is on...

But Akerson is apparently too stupid to realize that the government will NEVER stop regulating the mileage requirements of new vehicles. Advocating a trade-off will will only elicit an agreement that will inevitably be ignored by future regulators.

Most notably Mr. Akerson called for a massive gas tax hike in the U.S. commenting, “You know what I’d rather have them do — this will make my Republican friends puke — as gas is going to go down here now, we ought to just slap a 50-cent or a dollar tax on a gallon of gas. People will start buying more Cruzes and they will start buying less Suburbans.”

talking like this, this idiot won’t be CEO much longer. If you just look at profit margins on the two cars he mentions - 45% on a suburban and less than 10% on a POS cruise. Customers, I mean lemmings, would have to buy about 20 cruises to one suburban to keep profits where this idiot can still collect his 9 million dollar salary.
