(Reuters) - Defense Secretary Robert Gates bluntly told Marines on Sunday that they won't be able to opt out of their enlistment just because they disagree with a government decision to end a ban on gays serving openly in the military.
Gates, who is on a tour of Afghanistan to bid farewell to the troops before stepping down at the end of the month, was quizzed by a Marine sergeant about the controversial policy during a question and answer session at a base in southwestern Helmand Province.

Well, if any jarheads make a public statement to the negative about queers, trannies, etc I’m sure it will be reflected in their EER or OER or possibly an article 15 or what you squids call a Captain’s Mast.
Then there is the old “hostile work environment” crap that will pop up when you don’t treat some butt bandit like a long lost brother.
I had a roommate in ‘76 that was reputed to be an aggressive fag. I had and have no idea if that was true or not. I simply told him that if he bothered me in any way, shape or form I was gonna stomp a hole in his chest. He never caused me any problems and we got along quite well. If I said that now, I’d probably get a courts martial.
“The Marines were the last bastion of war fighters.”
Not quite, FRiend.
***Im really puzzled that any normal people even see it as something worth dying for anymore - their country is gone.***
If you’re really Irish, YOUR country is gone. Don’t disparage those who love THIS country, and are willing to live and die for it. And that includes the Irish who came here for freedom of religion, etc.
I live in base housing and we had to sign a form about sexual predators before they voted on DADT last year. I thought that was kind of strange seeing as we are on a military installation.
As I remember, during the draft you were sent where they needed you, which is why so many people enlisted trying to get someplace that they would rather be than where they may be sent if they had a low number.
Doing mandatory service has pros and cons. Maybe more cons now because of the way that things are going on the PC aspect of things. At one time, it was a good thing, people became more self sufficient, responsible and patriotic. They had sacrificed and appreciated things more.
I don’t know if a draft would have the same outcome now. A lot has changed and not necessarily for the better.
Shame on you Gaytes! Enjoy your retirement while our military's morality and morale rots due to your pro-perverted agenda.
GOD BLESS this Marine for calling Gates out publicly on his dirty breaking of contract on the little weasel's way out. Doesn't matter how often you repeat the lie Gaytes. Our Military members have earned the RIGHT to express and live out their personally deep held convictions by opposing your sodomite agenda.
“....Service in the U. S. Marine Corps requires the loss of many liberties that civilians enjoy; especially, the right of association. Individual Marines cannot choose their leaders or with whom they will work and live. It is beyond governmental authority to force these Americans into situations that compromise their morals. The Selective Training & Service Act of 1940 permits the granting of Conscientious Objector status to One who by reason of religious training and belief is conscientiously opposed to participation in war. Little known is: People v. Stewart, 7 Cal. 143, Conscientious Scruple. A conscientious scruple against . . . doing military duty, or the like is an objection or repugnance growing out of the fact that the person believes the thing demanded of him is morally wrong, his conscience being the sole guide to his decision . . . (Black’s Law Dictionary). This Conscientious Scruple provision appears to give Marines of conscience a legal remedy for a morally compromising situation of serving under or with Marine homosexuals...”

My (much) older brother, whose draftability would have been in the 1950s-60s, told me when discussing military service that it was one life experience he really missed having. He was “4F” due to a pin in his arm. All his friends had been drafted, and what he saw made him appreciate the discipline and skills, and that special camaraderie, they had gained in the service.
Whether any of that could ever be reconstructed is quite another story.
>Whether any of that could ever be reconstructed is quite another story.<
Exactly. Back then, I think that most of the left were about as conservative as most of our republicans are today. We have just swung too far over the wrong way being PC and the military may god bless every last one of them, ends up bearing the brunt of the worst decisions.
Take a soldier from 40 years ago and compare the attitudes he worked under against what our men and women face today and you would probably see a completely different experience. Not necessarily a better one.
Expect less and less recruitments/people joining, and as a result I predict it will give the bureaucrat POS an excuse to revive the draft. Which maybe the ultimate goal:turn people against our once great military.
The ultimate end result will be the destruction of America, as we will be defenseless against the monsters who seek to annihilate us.
OK, I’m open to suggestions on that.
But in the stupid Gates-Mullin poll, the combat Marines were the most staunchly against open homosexuals in the military. The combat Marines voted strongest against the repeal of DADT. The other services were awfully squishy on this issue.
“Dont disparage those who love THIS country, and are willing to live and die for it.”
I don’t disparage them; I hope they don’t have to die for someone else’s country, though.
In my opinion, the surveys were skewed by the brass in favor of the repeal. Combat troops in the army were against it as well. Remember, the army chief of staff was a complete political hack, remf, who never served a day in combat, lead troops in combat, didn’t have the Expert Infantry Badge, nada, zip, zero, zen, nothing.
The army combat units are war fighters. The airdale warplane pilots are warfighters as are the squid pilots.
Take care, brother.
Lots of good warfighters there.
Another irritating thing — liberals say that homosexuals serve without problem in the European and Israeli armies.
Don’t troops over there all live off-base? That’s a lot different than sharing showers and barracks.
The only european army that’s done any fighting are the Brits. I have no idea what their policy is. The rest of them have no credibility as they have done zip for 65 years.
The Israeli army is mostly made up of reserves, I think. Reserves usually live at home.
Interesting! I think I read somewhere that Brit troops live off base too. Britain has a secular, decadent culture. Weekly church attendance is in the single digits.
Of course homosexuals run wild over there.
The muslims aren’t far behind the homos, either. Britain better get their act together very soon or they will cease to exist as a western country.
That’s what happens when a nation abandons God. Liberals may not care, but a vacuum is created. AS WITH ALL VACUUMS, IT MUST BE FILLED.
Into the vacuum comes the energetic — Muslims. The decadent — homosexuals, baby killers, and libertines. And the slothfully needy — bureaucrats, unions, welfarists, and pensioners.
That’s the Democratic constituency, right there.
Cheers!
You wrote....
“Not so sure I want to serve with people who settle on the service as a last resort. Sort of like well I never wanted to go into the military, but I cant find any other work. Thats not the type of people I want to serve with IMHO.”
My response....
In 1957, I graduated from a small High School in a small town in East Tennessee. My family was poor, college was not in my future and there was no prospects for meaningful work.
Since I had no car, I hitch-hiked 12 miles to a recruiters office so I could join the Navy.
I could go on and on about the Avionics technical schools I completed and the BS degree I worked hard for.
If I am not the type of people you would want to serve with, you sir have a problem.
I take offence to your statement and you have no clue about what the hell you are talking about.
G’day
