No opt-out for opponents of gays in military: Gates

(Reuters) - Defense Secretary Robert Gates bluntly told Marines on Sunday that they won't be able to opt out of their enlistment just because they disagree with a government decision to end a ban on gays serving openly in the military.

Gates, who is on a tour of Afghanistan to bid farewell to the troops before stepping down at the end of the month, was quizzed by a Marine sergeant about the controversial policy during a question and answer session at a base in southwestern Helmand Province.

Not so sure I want to serve with people who settle on the service as a last resort. Sort of like well I never wanted to go into the military, but I can’t find any other work. That’s not the type of people I want to serve with IMHO.

Not to worry, the military isn't taking these folks anymore. There was a time when after every employer closed the door in your face, well, there's always the Army. Those days are gone. The military is in the historically unprecedented position these days to take only the best from a huge pool of interested applicants. Good for the military? Sure. Right now. Wait till things get better out in the civilian world.

Fact is people join the military for myriad reasons, only one of which is patriotism. People join to do their duty. They join because of family tradition. Indeed, some join because they want to be tested in battle, to get the opportunity to fight and kill. Some join to get away from a bad crowd back home, to escape their lousy town, loser friends and family. Others join to see the world. Some join for college money. And yes, many enlist because it is a job that pays well with great benefits --for now.

Anyone know if Gates is a cross dress or full blown fudge pasker?

oh, I am SURE this is at the top of their agenda ... destroy the morale of the military, push the gay agenda in schools and throughout the govt, make as many people as possible dependent on govt largesse. wreck the economy ... all comes up to a nifty package for the Blame America First crowd. Cuts us down to size, doesn’t it ?

Next up is putting women in combat. See Pelosi commission.

Patsy Schroeder, may she rot.

Actually, a lot of third world countries use “human shields” in combat, if we are to be saddled with queers in the military(THAT didn’t sound good)then I can see a use for them. Front lines.
I just don’t see how this is going to fly.

I agree. Enlistment is a contract, right ? Does the contract say anything about it being nullified if significant policy changes happen ?

I have no problem with deviants and feminists dying in combat; apparently it’s their country now anyway.

Neither do I, especially if huge numbers of them enlist with the rest of us in truly dangerous battles.

“I’m really puzzled that any “normal” people even see it as something worth dying for anymore - their country is gone.”

America, for all that is sick about it, is still worth fighting for. Slip of the tongues in much of the Middle East toward the Ayatollahs or other dictators get you serious punishment, whereas I can poke fun of president Obama here in the states and not get arrested - not even once. People have their hissy fits, but I will be all too willing to believe some remnant of a republic will outlast all that goes wrong. It won’t neccessarily be easy, but in the end, it will prevail.

you are preaching to the wrong choir. I did 10 years in the Army, and discharged honorably. I am glad to be out and will never advocate anyone to join, especially not my kids. I am all for conscription (2 years) unless there is a college deferment. I do not see the professional force as a real job or career and honestly think it’s turning a generation of kids dependent on the federal government, psychic treatment, and just the overall feeling that you can’t really do anything but the military. Sorry but that’s my personal opinion.

“army promoted females ahead of more qualified males in the mid 70s.”

During my last few years in the Air Force, I noticed that the number of female unit and group commanders was disproportional to the demographic make up of the service.

I also saw a few of those ladies removed from their command due to poor performance and bad decisions.

The nightmare is getting worse. They’ve announced plans to put women in subs (sir, I’m pregnant. Surface this sub now or I’ll sue you for discrimination!).

They'll just mandate birth control the way the mandate immunizations, including the HPV immunization.

Few other than Christians would complain about it and Christians aren't allowed to be offended.

I think the 8 year commitment they demand is a bit too extreme too. They should at least offer smaller term options. The Militia(National Guard) commitment should be measured in mouths to a year at the most. They unlike the Regulars are suppose to be a civilian service!

“Our land forces are suffering in morale”

I don’t see that. In my neighborhood the National Guard guys are doing just fine. All have an SUV and a new truck in the driveway. Many can afford stay at home wives and are working on U. of Phoenix masters. As long as times are tough these guys will be happy to continue cashing those NG checks no matter how many rump rangers sign up.

It is already starting. What they are saying now is you do not have to accept them but you must tolerate them. They are already talking about trannys at the Marine Corps ball!

This goes beyond mere disagreement. This strikes at the heart of our national honor. Is it *possible* to serve honorably in a sodomized military?

The problem with gays in the military is it is a major distraction, when gays are around it disgusts me, I think about butt-holes and I don’t like to think about butt-holes ever, especially when I am on a mission.
