~ EXCERPT ~

Friends and former colleagues say Lawrence S. Eagleburger, the only career foreign service officer to rise to the position of secretary of state, has died.

Word of Eagleburger's death Saturday came from representatives of former President George H.W. Bush and former Secretary of State James Baker.

No other details were immediately available.

Eagleburger, who was 80, was a straightforward diplomat whose exuberant style masked a hard-driving commitment to solving foreign policy problems.

Condolences to the family and friends of this good man.
America has lost a great patriot.

I always enjoyed hearing Sec. Eagleburger’s comments on Fox News. He was honest and concerned about the welfare of our great country. We will miss him but, he is now at peace and with his beloved wife.

This was a great guy. He was one of the few that I’d watch on TV, agreeing with almost every word he’d say.

Eagleburger was in a tight spot on the McCain campaign between disdain for both Obama and Palin. But he was one of the most brilliant secretaries of state in US history. And ne of the last "straight talk" guys--he will be missed....

Sad news. He was good friends with my NC Senator Jesse Helms, and both were stalwart defenders of the Constitution and US national sovereignty.

A great patriotic American. I wish the 2nd president Bush had relied upon him as much as the 1st Bush had. The country missed and will miss his sound judgment and devotion.

The career of Eagleburger will I suppose always be compared to that of Kissinger. In Kissinger one never really knew (or even knows today) where he was coming from, who he represented financially, and who he was covering for. In the case of Eagleburger, the media always knew where he stood, and what he stood for. There was no obfuscation.

That's too bad. This guy had a lot of wisdom on current affairs. He made it to 80 as a heavy smoker too. RIP.

Had the chance to see him just a few weeks ago in Larry Sabato’s class, he seemed frail but mostly clear minded and articulate. Had some amazingly candid comments on current international affairs, the debt and what our role in the world should be.

Imagine how long he would have lived if he hadn’t shortened his life by being a heavy smoker. Yes, I am being a smartass; but not towards you, 1rudeboy. My father-in-law smoked 3 packs of Pall Mall unfiltered a day for 60 years.

He’s 96 and still doing pretty darn good for an old guy.

Eagleburger’s knowledge will be missed. RIP.

Only career diplomat to be SOS? I guess that shouldn’t surprise me.
