Assisted suicide advocate Jack Kevorkian, known as "Dr. Death" for helping more than 100 people end their lives, died early on Friday at age 83, his lawyer said.

Kevorkian died at Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Michigan, where he had been hospitalized for about two weeks with kidney and heart problems, said Mayer Morganroth, Kevorkian's attorney and friend.

Kevorkian, a pathologist, was imprisoned for eight years for second-degree murder and was paroled in 2007. As a condition of his parole, he vowed not to assist in any suicides.

He was convicted after a CBS News program aired showing a video of Kevorkian administering lethal drugs to a 52-year-old man suffering from debilitating amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or Lou Gehrig's disease.

He was an icon in the culture of death for a while. But for some reason, doctor-assisted suicide never really caught on.

Yeah, too bad, he would have made a great Obamacare Czar or the chairman of Obama’s 15 person expert healthcare panel.

Can I ask the obvious question? Did he do it himself?

Day of the funeral comes, the old priest arrives, it’s time for him to give the eulogy. He totters up to the pulpit, looks out at the very few people who’ve bothered to show up, and says the one nice thing there is to say about the dead old man:

“His attorney was worse!”

you have hit the nail on the head. Abortions are the worst act of our society. The child has no say in the matter, which was far different than what DocK. was doing.

I TOTALLY disagree with his conviction and imprisonment. I think people have a right to end their own lives in cases involving terminal illness...this is just another unnecessary gubermint intervention.

My dad was diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gherig’s Disease) in 2009. It is horrible disease that ends very badly and removes the patient’s dignities rather quickly. Six months of rapid decline later, he dialed 9-1-1 and waited to hear the sirens before killing himself on the porch with a rifle. Doctor-assisted suicide would have been a better option in his case.

I’m so sorry about your Dad. I’m really torn on this issue - I don’t think it’s right for a person to commit suicide, but on the other hand I cannot imagine how horrible it must be to waste away in prolonged pain, knowing that the end result will be your death anyway.

I am so sorry about your father. That breaks my heart to hear of someone suffering so much that a life comes to an end like that.

He murdered a Massachusetts woman who seemed to suffering from nothing worse than a temporary bout of depression. He was an evil man, fascinated by death, not a merciful angel.

Thanks. He was very independent and a great community guy. He wasn’t about to have his meals delivered and his butt wiped. They even had bathers scheduled.

If I’m ever in his position, I pray for the courage to do what he did. As shocking and horrible as it was, we completely understood. To call the police like that, wait for sirens, and go outside to spare the house. Even asked the cops to make sure the dog was given to the correct person.

The interesting thing here is that Kevorkian apparently stuck it out to the bitter end, clinging to whatever hope and the very last bit of life available to him - in stark contrast to his infamous willingness to prematurely end the lives of those who were suffering far less than he did.
