WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) -- Job growth decelerated sharply in May, the Labor Department said Friday. Total nonfarm payrolls increased by 54,000, much lower than the 125,000 gain expected by Wall Street economists. This is the smallest increase in nonfarm payroll since September. The unemployment rate ticked higher 9.1% in May from 9.0% in the previous month.

"(If someone gets a job for 6 hours a week - are they counted in that number? - anyone know?)"You mean like all the regime's census workers who were forced to do just that in order that the regime could falsely claim Porkulus "saved or created" a zillion jobs?
If so, the answer is "yes".

May have found something interesting in Table-A-9
http://www.bls.gov/news.release/empsit.t09.htm
Seasonally Adjusted
*****************May 2010 May 2011
Full Time Workers 112,646,000112,342,000 = -304,000 jobs
Part Time Workers 26,759,000 27,418,000 = +659,000 jobs
Multi Job Holders 7,226,000 6,939,000 = -287,000 jobs
Thank-you. An interesting little nougat. Replacing full time jobs with part time is a terrible trend.
It is my understanding that the BLS employment figures are the least corrupted of those put out by the government. There is a lot of information 'hidden in plain sight', and you have found an interesting piece of it.
I suspect the powers that be hope the public only looks at the select pieces of info that the MSM emphasizes.

Do yourself a favor and stop listening to paranoid Buchannites. It's as bad as Demodroids. People parrot soundbytes without understanding.
GHW Bush (Bush 1 to some, despite its obvious inaccuracy) is responsible for NAFTA. GW Bush couldn't repeal it by decree, so he tried closing the zillions of loopholes in it. Naturally, the Buchannonites and Democrats agreed this MUST be bad, because Bush is Evil.
PNTR was BILL CLINTON'S baby. Look it up. Where were you "true conservatives" when people like me were trying to put a stop to it DURING THE CLINTON REGIME?? WHY didn't YOU sign the petitions?? Don't tell me you did, or you'd know who's fault it really is. YEESH that really bugs me. If Buchannonites were REALLY that worried about outsourcing, you'd all have got on the bus with the rest of us when there was a chance of doing something about it. Blaming the wrong guy isn't going to change it.
And since "well, Bush should have repealed it" is the favorite post of libertarians, it is not in the power of the executive branch to summarily overrule the legislative branch. In other words, it would have been illegal.
There was no more illegal immigration during the Bush administration than during the Clinton administration adn i ask again: where were libertarians when WE were accuing the Clinton administration of fudging the numbers on illegal immigration to hide at least 2 mil illegals?? Same place you were when Clinton was campagning and drumming up support for PNTR, I guess.
During the Bush administration, so many lawsuits were filed against the INS for trying to carry out the building of the fence, and so many states acting in defiance of the sdministrations policies (lke they are with Obamacare now) that no headway could (or now will) be made untl the miles of red tape was worked through the court systems. Strangely, you guys didn't notice that while it was going on, either.
Bush made some terrible mistakes, like the DHS, but he is not responsible for Obama's screwups. Period.

Does it include the 125,000 legal foreign workers who enter EACH MONTH. This includes those here on work visas and permanent immigrant visas.
125,000 brand new foreign workers with work permits each month -- HERE'S THE PROOF [http://www.numbersusa.com/content/nusablog/beckr/august-19-2009/125000-brand-new-foreign-workers-work-permits-each-month-heres-proof.h]
First of all, disgusting indictment of both parties!
To answer your question - Yes. Although the household data is not collected by immigration status, it is collected by native born vs non native born See
Table A-7.
Payroll data focuses on industry, hours, and earnings and does not separate our native and foreign born.
See a list of all A and B tables
here.
Sorry it took me a while to get back to you, but I just saw your question.

From the same link: (table A-9)
http://www.bls.gov/news.release/empsit.t09.htm
From April 2011 - to - May 2011
Full time jobs - down -142,000
Part time jobs - up +330,000
I’d like to know how they figured it to be +54,000 in May.
With +330,000 part time job additions and -142,000 full time jobs, those part time jobs must be very part time to get to a 54K figure.
Part time jobs do not a recovery make
And - multiple part time workers (which make up 5% of total employment) dropped -164,000 people....according to the numbers they aren’t being picked up as full time people - so, what’s happening here?

Self employed is dropping. Down- May '11 -273,000 from May 2010 figures.

No American president since Franklin Delano Roosevelt has won a second term in office when the unemployment rate on Election Day topped 7.2 percent.
However, FDR was re-elected twice and could have won a 4th term, had circumstances allowed. The Left and the entitlement class love zerO, just as their grandparents loved FDR. There is absolutely no rational aspect to this love. It is purely tribal.
To a vast percentage of the electorate, today, there would be nothing worse than a Republican POTUS. They will not stand for it. They will not consider it. They, literally, would rather die.

Self employed is dropping. Down- May '11 -273,000 from May 2010 figures. This is really bad news. Traditionally the bulk of jobs coming out of a recession has been new small business hiring. It's not a good sign when we see consolidation in small business as well as large business.

Well you seem to know more than the average joe in regards to economics. What if we had spent that 1 trillion on, say, paying off every student loan in the country. What effect do you think it would have had on the economy? Or would it make things worse? Or no change at all?
Loved your post btw.

... Id like to know how they figured it to be +54,000 in May. ...
Here's what happening.
The BLS collects two types of data:
* Household data which is found in the A Tables, and
* Payroll data which is found in the B tables.
The official employment rate and the information you have posted thus far is all from the A tables.
The +54,00 figure is from the B tables. I has been adjusted by the Birth and Death model by
+206,000!. About 1/2 way down the page, notice the annual benchmark adjustment in January of this Year!.
List of all the A and B tables found
here
The Birth and Death model is a statistical tool to guesstimate the number of jobs that are added and lost as the result of businesses opening and closing.
Sneaky little devils aren't they.

Bush's fault. Stimulus wasn't big enough. Higher taxes needed. We saved American auto makers. This is the new normal.
