Speaking at Tel Aviv conference, Meir Dagan says use of force should be Israel's last option, adding that the IDF could not stop Tehran's nuclear program, only delay it. By Gili Cohen Tags: Iran nuclear IDF Mossad
Israel would not withstand a regional conflict ignited by an Israeli strike of Iran's nuclear facilities, former Mossad chief Meir Dagan said on Wednesday, adding that Israel did not have the capability to stop Tehran's nuclear ambitions, just to delay them.
In his first public appearance since leaving the post in September, Dagan said earlier this month that the possibility a future Israel Air Force attack on Iranian nuclear facilities was "the stupidest thing I have ever heard."
Speaking during a conference in Tel Aviv on Wednesday, Dagan continued his public rejection of a military move against Iran, saying that Israel didn't "have the capability to stop the Iranian nuclear program, only to delay it."
"If anyone seriously considers [a strike] he needs to understand that he's dragging Israel into a regional war that it would not know how to get out of. The security challenge would become unbearable," Dagan said.
The former Mossad chief reiterated his position, saying that the "military option is the last alternative, not preferred or possible, but a last resort. Every other alternative must be weighed before the use of force."
Referring to those who criticized him for speaking out on these matters soon after his retirement, Dagan said: "I feel obligated to express my opinion on certain matters. The prime minister and defense minister are the ones in charge, but sometimes good sense and a good decision don't have anything to do with being elected."

“The Samson Option is a term used to describe Israels alleged deterrence strategy of massive retaliation with nuclear weapons as a last resort against nations whose military attacks threaten its existence, and possibly against other targets as well”
Even in the throes of its own death, Israel will never do this, no matter how tough they may talk.
The reason:
“Jewish guilt”.
It is the guilt and implausible self-loathing that comes from being “God’s chosen people” amongst a worldfull of others who are [biblically] lacking. It is the same inner guilt which causes American Jews to support an Obama in overwhelming numbers — the same Obama who would “stand with the Muslims” against Israel (as he so stated in one of his books, and has gone on to do, just as he said). They should “know better”, but even in the face of their collective intelligence and accomplishment, seem compelled to do something that is wholly self-destructive.
Yes, the Jews of Israel do what is necessary to “defend their soil” in Israel, and they do this extremely well. But they will NEVER strike en masse (i.e., using nuclear weapons, for example) against populations outside of Israel. For the “Jewish consciousness”, this is too much like the mass murder that was committed against their own people in World War II. They will hesitate, unable to “press that button”, held back by uncertainty and the inner fear of becoming mass killers themselves.
I’m not saying that Israel won’t strike against Iran. But if it does, it will be with conventional weapons in surgical, but limited, attacks.
To use nuclear weapons against civilian populations would — to them — seem “Hitlerian”.
If the time comes when Israel is attacked with nuclear force, and even seems to be destroyed — those who remain in command and with the power to lash back out at the Islamic world and take a good chunk of it down with themselves will reach for that button..... and...... be overcome by that guilt. As much as logic and war dictates that they respond in kind, they will hesitate.... and then back away. They won’t be able to do it.
Again: “Jewish guilt” will stay their hands.
Just speculatin’....
Haaretz is a ridiculous liberal paper who has been writing variations of this same article for over a decade.
The Samson option in this case would mean striking a secret deal with Saudi Arabia. or China.

Israel is ready it’s just that using nukes is noisy really messy (think radioactive garbage all over the place ) & it annoys the neighbors, think of Europe & all the weird beards in the area .
The strike will not be a conventional one I think but maybe something that will look like the Iranians scored their own goal so to speak with the resulting casualties in the ranks of the technical types.
Really? I never knew both Hollywood and Manhattan Jews were charged with the decision to nuke for the nation of Israel.
Fascinating insight.....simply fascinating.
Wow. Fake opposition. Glad we don't have anything like that going on in our country.
What is “G-d”?
Why develop and maintain them then?
Jewish custom.
The name of God is considered holy (the 2nd Commandment: Thou Shalt Not Take the Name of the Lord Thy God in Vain). Saying his name is, in essence, invoking His presence.
Thus is His name ‘censored’ in this regard, even ‘God’, which isn’t His true name.
Sounds likes a threat of a nuclear first strike by Israel to me.
Obama will give us this same state, armed with nuclears.
We are so 1970’s again it makes me want to puke.
This is end of the world stuff here. Thankfully most out there are to slow or too young or too evil to care what is coming.
The idea of writing G-d comes from the days before computers when the written word could be discarded, or temporary. If it was written out, and trashed, then it was considered a form of taking the lords name in vain. The word is sometimes replaced in conversation as well.
I have posted about it before...Israel can handle Iran all by itself. But it would be better and cost less Iranian lives if the USA was backing Israel up. That wont be happening with Zero at the helm.
With US help the inevitable crushing of Iran would be a strictly conventional affair. Israel on its own will be forced to use neutron weapons to control the Iranian nuclear sites.
There will be no images of destroyed cities and no fallout spreading across the globe. But still it will be a shock for the world to awaken one day soon and realize that a type of nuclear device has been used.
We better hope the war can be contained once neutron weapons are used on the battlefield, its definitely coming because Israel WILL be forced to attack Iran alone because we were stupid enough to elect the Won. There is only 0.00 chance that Israel will not be forced into this horrific mess. The Iranian nukes must be destroyed.
One of the main reasons the Arab states get support from the west is the oil.
If Israel has to fight another major war for its survival they need to grab control of a large percentage of that oil.
This will ensure several things, no boycotts - a boycott of Israel means you get no oil. the seizing of oil assets is a radical step but just how damn long does Israel have to be attacked before radical steps are justified?
Israel could take control of the Suez canal, and control of Iranian oil production...this would be tough, but within the capabilities of an Israel who has taken off the gloves. Control of Saudi oil would be easiest for Israel. Israel should permanently annex the Sinai and Suez if there is another war with Egypt...ensure control of Egypt by rigging the Aswan dam for destruction on a moments notice. The ability to destroy the Aswan and the muslim holy sites on a moments notice would give pause to anyone who might desire to attack Israel again.
Let the entire west kowtow to Israel to ensure a steady supply of oil. Kowtowing to the Arabs has been a disaster.
These things I am saying sound pretty outlandish I know, but once you realize that some day very soon Israel is going to be forced to use nuclear weapons against her adversaries they do not seem so out of bounds. The world letting Iran get nuclear weapons is what is going to bring the world to this disaster. It will be Israels time to finally take decisive action in her own interests.
Well put!
I wouldn't cost less American lives. More Mid East quagmires? No thanks.
Arabic civilization is an oxymoron....
