SANTA FE – The Environmental Improvement Board asked for testimony about the best way to cost-effectively reduce haze caused by power plants, but many of the people EIB heard from Wednesday wanted to talk about eliminating coal as a fuel and switching to renewable energy.

"Coal is a moral issue,” said Marlene Perroti of the Sisters of Mercy. Because of its environmental, health and climate effects, use of coal violates religious values of justice, stewardship and respect for life, she said.

The haze that the federal Environmental Protection Agency is requiring states to address is “a superficial indicator” of bigger, coal-related damage, said Joan Brown of the Franciscan order and New Mexico Interfaith Power and Light.

Yes: It was great when Nuns gave their lives to the Church, Prayed, ran schools, Hospitals ,homes for unwed mothers, and did things more suited to the Christian lifestyle they chose.

I presume it has all new members — IIRC all but one were asked to resign. The EPA proposal supported by the Richardson administration was the more costly one (of course!). This one is less costly but NM will have to fight EPA to get it approved. They can’t do nothing, so this is the lessor of the evils and supported by the power industry (again, for obvious reasons).

What nun are you talking about? I'm referring to Bernard Cohen and this is a topic I've been studying for about 3 decades. Coal use is ubiquitous. It's cheap. But it's also dirty, produces huge amounts of toxic and radioactive waste (much more than all the nuclear plants combined), and is responsible for at least 10,000 deaths per year in the U.S. alone. Of course, better coal than nothing, but better even fast breeder reactors than coal. For the moronic environmentalist left nuclear is to coal what gun deaths are for the anti-gun nut compared to automobile deaths and disabilities. Both are criticizing the wrong things for the wrong reasons.

Oh, the nutcase, Marlene. Energy availability is a moral issue. Because of the way lack of energy causes poverty and disease, any attempt to displace coal in favor of something that costs more for the same amount of electricity or to reduce the amount of electricity available to who has it now and/or to prevent its introduction to regions of the world that desperately need it violates religious values of justice, stewardship, and respect for life. If Marlene were really interested in morality and helping the poor, she'd be first in line agitating for the widespread and worldwide use of nuclear energy and the electrification of every backwater town on the face of the planet.

Indeed coal in the form of coke is used.

But oil is even more critical to modern life as it is the main ingredient in chemicals, plastics, synthetics, pharmaceuticals, etc.

And the best thing about coal is that it can be liquefied and act as a substitute for oil.

Yes, I was trying to make a joke about the her, it was bad I admit.

I agree about nuclear power. We need more of it.

I disagree about coal being poison. Poison is everywhere in minute quantities. Burning coal does nothing to change that, with the exception of redistribution. If it were that poison, coal power station workers would be dropping like flies from arsenic, thorium, mercury, and other types of poisoning. This is because this is the place where it is combusted and they are exposed more than any others. I have worked in coal plants for 15 years. I have never heard of people getting sick from these substances. As a matter of fact, these substances are so minute, a normal coal sample chemical analysis doesn't even detect them. You literally have to burn tons of the stuff to get an amount that is still minute. Add in dispersion back into the environment and it is insignificant. I'd worry more about poisoning from the asphalt shingles on the roof, and I don't worry about that either.
