NBA star Shaquille O'Neal appears ready to hang up his size 23 basketball shoes after one of the most dominant careers at his position in league history.

"I'm retiring" and "Shaq ooout" was posted Wednesday to his Twitter account, which also links to a video in which he talked of his intentions.

“We did it. Nineteen years, baby. (I) want to thank you very much. That’s why I’m telling you first, I’m about to retire. Love you. Talk to you soon,” Shaq said in the video on Tout.com, linked from his Twitter account.

In a different Tout.com clip, O'Neal said, "I know you heard I just announced I'm retired, so I need your help. Help me come up with a new nickname."

His team, the Boston Celtics, has not announced his retirement.

It should have ended better, he hung on for a few years too long.

I just hope he can keep his weight until control, he needs to stay active, or with that big body of his, he won’t make it to 50.

If only Shaq could have been a better free throw shooter, he could have been even better than Kareem. But all of the “Hack-A-Shaq” over the years took its’ toll.

I met him one night in Korea...I was working Military Police Duty Officer, and he came to the front gate at Yongsan, assuming that since he was an American citizen, he'd be entitled to access to an American Military post. I told him he'd need to find a service member to sponsor him on post. I pointed him toward Itaewon, where he'd have no problem finding any number of GI's who would be thrilled to meet him.

I was kind of expecting the "Do you know who I am?" response, but instead, he understood, and headed downrange toward Itaewon, lol....

Maybe he’ll have time to go to a speech therapist now and work on his annunciation.

It’s not as if Shaq had a choice, maybe he could have landed a gig in Europe, but that’s about it.

I was kind of expecting the "Do you know who I am?" response, but instead, he understood

His step-father was an Army sergeant, so Shaq grew up around military bases. The story is well-known that LSU's head coach, Dale Brown, was touring a base in Germany and bumped into a young (and enormous) Shaquille, asking in which unit he served. When Shaq replied that he was "only 14," Brown gulped in amazement and had Shaq take him to his (step-)father. Four years later, Shaq enrolled at LSU.

This background may have contributed to Shaq's interest in law enforcement. He has trained to be a peace officer and done some minor service, and he always said he'd like to become a sheriff upon retiring. We'll see.

He’s still playing. Wiener hacked his account and sent CNN pictures of Shaquille’s wiener.
