Talk about a sacrifice that will warm your heart. A group of older Japanese folks are asking for permission to clean up the contaminated nuclear power station in Fukushima.
More than 200 retirees are volunteering to take the place of young people who are exposing themselves to high levels of radiation. The group figures they have less than 20 years to live and will be dead before any radiation induced cancer develops. It's a different story for the young people who have battled in this war zone for three months and are at great risk for developing cancer as they grow older.
All that is stopping these pensioners from donning their radiation suits is the Japanese government which unfortunately is dragging its bureaucratic feet
I am for once, without words. Just frigging awesome.
Japan has never had a shortage of gallant and brave people.
Just like this country, the older generation did not grow up playing Nintendo and Playstation and wussified themselves. I was just talking to a J buddy of mine before we started talking about our next summer project and which anime we will be subbing and he mentioned that the new generation are so full of themselves.
This is the second thread on this I have seen.
I am not complaining, but thought you should know.
NEWS like this needs to get around. It takes time and repetition for more to be aware of it.
That being said, those Japanese. They are an amazing culture, are they not?

Great article, great sacrifice.
Let this be a heads-up to the #ing Commies in the USA.
A great loss the Japanese heritage and culture will be. The Emperors of Japan must be rolling in their graves. Or is that why the ground is still shaking over there?
Having lived there for 5 years and have a Japanese wife I can say that this sense of obligation/duty felt by the older generation to insure the health of younger generations is genuine.
Let me find 1 Liberal willing to do that and I would be surprised.
I’m not as savvy as Freeper AmericaninTokyo, but I do TONS of anime fansubs as I belong to such a group. They are so introverted and xenophobic but their animes are so full of blonde characters. It’s that complicated. And yeah, they have a hard-on for European stuff.

The spirit of the Samurai lives on. . . WE need more people with this kind of attitude. . .
These Japanese people (of that generation at least) will give all and then some for their beloved Japan. It is "my country right or wrong" ("正しくても正しくなくても俺たちのニッポン"」 for most of these guys. I know of folks in their 80s who want to go up there and do something. They figure "my life is near the end anyway, I want to do it to save the next generations of Japanese". They truly feel that way.
You have those who enlist the day after 9-11 and go straight to Iraq or Afghanistan, maybe three tours, injured and nary a complaint, and then you have a bunch of pussies on campus who smoke dope, jerk off, cut class, and wont let the ROTC step foot on their soil....so there are two extremes in American Youth these days.
Same for Japan.
I have been really, REALLY impressed with some of the Young Japanese who went up there to Tohoku who went to help out, and even just last night they were interviewing Japanese Ground Self Defense Forces (i.e. their "Army") "kids" in their early 20s, some of them working out in a field near the nuke plant for two straight months now without much of a break. Real suntanned, hardy, sturdy country-boy type Japanese, very serious and committed.
So, the long and short of it is, I guess, it cuts both ways.....
Shichisei Hōkoku!
I didn’t see it posted the first time, so thanks for posting this incredible story. Amazing.
Unfortunately it can (or could as history shows us) be used for great EVIL, but also has the capability of being used for great GOOD, great humanitarianism. Hats off to the Japanese when they behave well like this, and show a moral, positive, good mettle to help those in a jam, weakened, and in dire need. Heaven knows it won't come from GOVERNMENT, so much as it will from the People. In this case, Elderly People.
Agreed!
