These Japanese people (of that generation at least) will give all and then some for their beloved Japan. It is "my country right or wrong" （"正しくても正しくなくても俺たちのニッポン"」 for most of these guys. I know of folks in their 80s who want to go up there and do something. They figure "my life is near the end anyway, I want to do it to save the next generations of Japanese". They truly feel that way.
