Five generals, two colonels and a major told a news conference in Rome that they fled Libya in protest at the killings of civilians and that Col Gaddafi's military strength had been reduced by 80 per cent.
Only ten generals remain loyal, Gen Melud Massoud Halasa, one of the defectors, said.
At least 100 more army officers have left Libya in recent days, according to Abdurrahman Shalgam, Libya's ambassador to the United Nations, who defected himself in the early days of the uprising against Col Gaddafi's regime.
The mass defection will place more pressure on Col Gaddafi's military, which is now fighting rebel forces on three fronts – to the west in the Nafusa mountains, in the enclave around Misurata and against the main opposition forces in Benghazi and Ajdabiya in the east.
The rebels in both Benghazi and Misurata are being assisted by western advisers. Britain has confirmed it has sent advisers to Benghazi to help with organisation and logistics, and western troops were filmed in Misurata for the first time by al-Jazeera at the weekend.
The defence secretary, Liam Fox, also warned at the weekend that RAF Tornado jets would be loaded with 2,000 bunker-buster bombs and targeted on compounds used by the regime in Tripoli in the coming days.
Nato's secretary-general, Anders Fogh Rasmussen, said: "Gaddafi's reign of terror is coming to an end. He is increasingly isolated at home and abroad. Even those closest to him are departing, defecting or deserting."
Col Gaddafi has still refused to listen to demands that he leave office – regarded by the rebels and Nato as essential for a resolution of the crisis.

They fled Libya because they thought they might get killed in a NATO air strike. Same thing will happen with North Korean generals when that war finally breaks out.
Those Generals claim they left because of Qaddafi killing Civilians. I imagine they looked and saw they were on the losing end and know that when the Rebels take over the killing will not stop, it will just be a new bunch of killers. Guess who they will target?

Maybe, but more likely to save their own skin when Gadaffi eventually loses. They will not face trial after it is all over.

Yes it would seem so IF the reports are true.The reports are not verifiable at this point,. It could be propaganda to cover criticism of NATO , as it ups the spending and their military involvement to begin using strategic weapons ( bunker busters), their UN mandate has been exceeded because these bombs will kill many “civilians” , the very ones the UN mandate was supposed to protect? Barry Soetoro has done the end run around Congress on the exercise of War Power, Il Duce style.
Has anybody thought what would happen IF Qadaffi is indeed defeated? The Muslim Brotherhood in control of Yemin, part of Kenya, Syria,Somalia, Northern Sudan and Libya? The entire sub-Saharan continent will become free pickings for the MB, and the spread of radical Islam into Africa guaranteed, relegating Africa to more blood, terror and genocidal inter-tribal warfare for generations.China is aghast,it has invested heavily in Africa. And I will continue to root for Qadaffi.He is not done even if his military is defeated. Qadaffi is a Bedou, and that tribe will never allow Libya to be taken.Libya will be war torn for generations in a war that the Bedoiun know exactly how to engage. They will fight for their homeland, against the so called “ New World Order” and the Sharia Law of a nuclear armed Caliphate.They are patriots.
