Schools remove filters on gay, lesbian websites

Published: May 27, 2011

PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY, Va. - Prince William County Public Schools has removed filters that block access to certain websites with content relating to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender issues.

In April, the American Civil Liberties Union of Virginia sent a letter to the school system asking officials to remove the software blocking the sites.

The ACLU learned of the blocking of LGBT sites through its “Don’t Filter Me” initiative, which shows students how to report that their school is filtering content.

At the time, ACLU spokesman Kent Willis said that it was clear that Prince William schools were blocking the LGBT sites while allowing anti-LGBT sites to be viewed.

The action violated the students’ First Amendment rights, Willis said.

School systems aren’t allowed to discriminate based on “viewpoint” and schools are legally bound to provide students with “viewpoint neutral” access to the Internet, Willis said.

In a Prince William Public Schools news release, Keith Imon, the associate superintendent for communications and technology services, said that the school system was able to remove the filters and still keep students safe from other content.

“Internet filtering is difficult, sometimes imprecise, and constantly evolving. It is nearly impossible to find the perfect balance between the protection of students, freedom of speech, and equal access,” Imon said in the release. “However, the decision to discontinue the use of the LGBT filter is within this balance.”

I think the real issue is recognizing the fact that Virginia, in its northern segment, borders on D.C.. I would be willing to bet plenty of D.C. politicians and staff have their summer homes there in Virginia, or possibly live there if all they have to do is cross the Potomac River. Either way, you easily can have a significant voting block and judiciary for leftist causes due to the proximity to D.C.

What I find problematic is the false idea that this is a freedom issue. Children do not have the right to surf what they will.

The big issue here is how explicit some things are, as far as it appears to me, a great deal is about presenting something on the web that meets the proper standards.

I have seen plenty of sites that were blocked by filtering software due to the profanity of the posts or the bloggers involved. There’s no need to use language that violates the terms of the filter, even if I do disagree with their position. There’s no need to be crude or bombastic in how you present.

Testing the filter used according to the article, all of those sites are available under high filter settings, the “LGBT” category, however, is blocked under the high setting although not the normal one.

Shut down the government schools/leftist propaganda centers. Problem solved.

That would explain some of the things I saw last week, while visiting there.

Add keywords homosexual agenda to flag FR articles to this ping list.

Schools are becoming practically nothing but indoctrination centers for homosexuals. It's absolutely disgusting and every parent who has children in public school should monitor every single thing that goes on. Librarians are commonly ultra leftists, I have no idea why. Also teachers. And to add insult to injury, everyones' property taxes gets sucked into the depraved pit of public schoolery.

SEPARATION OF SCHOOL AND STATE!!!!

Also note the evil ACLU involved. The ACLU is one of the most destructive enemies of all that is good and decent in this country. No wonder, it was founded by communists.

NOM is not a conservative organization— they claim to be against gay marriage, but are actually pro-homosexuality. This has been stated several times on their Facebook page.

they HAVE your kids and by God they are going to do as they please to them.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Every conservative should dedicate him or herself to the complete abolishment of government schooling on every level. Why?

Reason:
Every ( that means **all**) government owned and run school in this nation is utterly godless in its worldview. Children **will** learn to think and reason godlessly. They must simply to cooperate with the classroom indoctrination ( oops! “instruction”) and homework assignments. Homosexuality can only thrive in a godless environment.

And....No, there never was any golden age of government schooling. At their very best they offered up a generic and lukewarm Protestantism that could be accepted by voting mob without rebellion. Children who attend lukewarm Christian schools learn to be comfortable with lukewarm religion. Well...We know what Christ does with the lukewarm. He spits them out of His mouth!

If the majority of our nation's citizen who are alive today, had been educated in a thoroughly Judeo-Christian environment that integrated that child's specific religious beliefs into every minute of the school day, we would not be having this discussion about homosexuality. It wouldn't be in our faces in the culture, in the media, in the arts, or part of the K-12 or college classroom discussion. It would still be locked in the closet where it belongs.

ANOTHER REASON TO HOMESCHOOL

This ping list is for the “other” articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. This can occasionally be a fairly high volume list. Articles pinged to the Another Reason to Homeschool List will be given the keyword of ARTH. (If I remember. If I forget, please feel free to add it yourself)

The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.

Seven in one day? Yeah, it's got to be a record.

The ACLU is DEMANDING an apology from someone involved with a student led prayer at graduation and demanding that porn be allowed in public schools.

This is SOOOO screwed up.

The action violated the students’ First Amendment rights, Willis said.

The ACLU violated the students First Amendment rights when they prohibited the free exercise thereof in student led prayer.

Porn is OK but prayer isn't?

THEY ARE SUCH HYPOCRITES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Virginia is getting to be as homo as Massachusetts. The former head of the Virginia ACLU is a pedophile who is currently in prison "for downloading what authorities said was some of the most abhorrent child pornography they have ever seen". That's only the tip of the iceberg in Virginia. IIRC there are entire pedophile closed communities in Virginia where the residents pass children around from one house to the next like tubs of popcorn.

Here's all you need to know about the Virginia ACLU (story from CBS News):

Ex-President of Virginia ACLU Sentenced For Child Porn

(AP) A man who for 12 years served as president of the Virginia chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union was sentenced to seven years in prison for downloading what authorities said was some of the "most abhorrent" child pornography they have ever seen.

Condition children into thinking the abnormal is normal. You destroy the Bible and idea of God as you encourage destructive, nihilistic ideas that create dysfunctional people who put emotions above intellect.

Also, they're making sure the homo-curious kid surfs at school instead of at home where parents may have a filter up or check browser histories, discover what he's up to and lovingly get him some help instead of affirming his self-destruction.

I went to an amazing public school. In a middle-class district. It was godless, but I didn’t much want God there. Math and science are godless, and literature is better viewed from the teller’s perspective, not from God’s.

Christ, the world is changing, deal with it. I think I’ve just run out of patience with people like you. We live in an amazing time. It really saddens me when people don’t see that, or bide their time until the rapture. See the silver linings, they’re everywhere.

My workplace would never tolerate browsing sites like this, and have internet filters that prevent access and log attempts.

If corporate America doesn't allow this, then why is it okay for the schools to allow it?
