Mandatory vehicle 'black-boxes' under consideration
WRGB-TV ^ | 5/26/11

The National Traffic Highway Safety Association expects to have a decision by the end of the year on whether all new vehicles will be required to have 'event data recorders' installed.

Known as 'black-boxes' the recorders collect vehicle data in the moments leading up to during, and after a crash. Unlike aircraft 'black-boxes' the vehicle data recorders do not make audio recordings.

“I’m keeping my 1992 Honda Accord alive with minimal monetary means as I understand how to fix most of the normal breaks. It has 270,000 miles on it.”

I have a ‘91 Miata with a similar amount of miles on it, and I have decided that I will only replace it when the chassis rusts in half. There’s something to be said for cheap, reliable, and fun to drive... without Big Brutha watching.

RE> Can we just bring back the f’g HORSE and BUGGY already? I’ll just deal with all the horseshit. God knows we already do!

Why do I not doubt that there would be a system developed to DNA trace any unsecured horseshit right back to you. The federal and state horseshit green tax will find you. There is no escape.

My ‘92 Miata has 200K miles. It sat idle since the family came along; not a great family car. So the rats ate out most of what was soft around the engine. But I drove cross country in it and it’s the best and most fun car I’ve driven. It’s on my long term to-do list (think retirement) to restore it. By then my kid will want it :)

I think I’ll just skip new cars and start buying old stuff.

No one seems to be impressed with anything I have so it won’t make a difference and if the vehicle needs work I can fix it without calling Microsoft.

I haven't had a chargeable accident in 30+ years. Screw 'em. (Yes, my insurance is really cheap.)

Low-techs will rule.

Yep, and they'll survive the pulse, too.

Did Honda ever get rid of the oil pump drive shims that wear down, allowing the oil pump drive gear to drop out of alignment with the camshhaft gear which drives the pump?

When that happens (because the oil pump gear is harder than the camshift worm), the camshaft gear (and the camshaft) is destroyed. Happened twice with my older Accord -- filling the engine with metal chips each time...

We'll find out whether or not it will go well over the estimated 3,000 hours MTBF.

That's only 125 days .... ?

I know some guys who are really, really good at re-programming ECUs (engine control units) for performance. It is sort of an open source project among a small group, if you will.

I have little doubt they could take on such a project. One of the leaders of this crew is anti-Big Government enough that he would probably just release the code, no black market needed.

They'll decide? Wonder what the punishment will be for disabling or removing them?

There'll be a huge aftermarket for whatever it takes to modify them to never see speed over 70 etc.

Once again a prime example of a federal agency running roughshod over Congress.
Congress should just close itself down if federal agencies can make law.
