LONDON It was all going so well.
But when the time came for President Obama to deliver his toast to Queen Elizabeth Tuesday night, the meticulously planned state dinner at Buckingham Palace turned, well, awkward.
As Obama began wrapping up his remarks, he put down his notecards and picked up his glass.
Ladies and gentlemen, please stand with me and raise your glasses as I propose a toast, the president said, as the guests stood up. To her majesty the Queen.
At this point, the band queued up God Save the Queen. But Obama wasnt quite finished yet.
So he kept talking over the British national anthem and the president competed with orchestra for a few more seconds.
For the vitality, Obama said just before the music started, of the special relationship between our peoples, and in the words of Shakespeare, To this blessed plot, this Earth, this realm, this England.
Obama raised his glass, but nobody else in view of the camera followed. And the queen, who had been looking straight ahead, glanced over to offer a pained smile.

What d*mned idiot DOESN’T know that the anthem for the monarch is played after the words “The Queen”.
Yeah, it annoyed people here too, and, so far, has been mainly seen as yet another example of American boorishness. Sorry, I mean no insult, but a lot of my friends on all sides of the political divide are livid about it and emails are flying! As your president we consider him, rightly or wrongly, the representative of the American people, as Her Majesty is for us.
I am betting some low grade staffer gets the chop though. Not something I’d wish on anyone in these times.

Get over yourself.
Or better still - take that concern trolling to DU.
No. Wrong. Either you play the game or you stay the f*ck off the field. Maybe he should join you on the bench with your thumbs stuck up your respective *sses.
Talking over an ally's national anthem is just crass.
Well that was awkward!!! The whole thing was, the Queen never seemed to care what he was saying.....Thank you for link!!!
Is he on drugs?
Thank God this was not G. W. Bush — State-run, Lame Stream Media would have been reporting on this throughout the week.
Had in been G. W., May, 2008 and a bad toast gone awry would be the lead story on the network news for at least a day or two with commentary on how inept and a klutz our President might be.
I think that a “protocol czar” should be the next appointment. What an amateur bunch!
The dude is seriouly in need of a new host... “O”-pophis just taint the old Go’auld system lord he used to be. Too much time in the sarcophagus no doubt.....
On the contrary, they were rude to interrupt the President of the United States as he gave a toast to the Queen of England.
Be glad we didn’t send Joe Biden over. He would have sung “My country tis of thee” at the top of his lungs or something.
lol Interrupting an ally as he toasts the Queen is rude and crass.
The clown could mess up a two car funeral.
Pray for America
Off topic...noticed your tag...((((hugs))))
Saw that too. He has something seriously wrong and I am beginning to think he does do drugs.
As an old chief used to say, “He could F**k up a wet dream!”
What a Putz
You got that right. Dick head would also be appropriate.
I must say one thing. Michelle did have on some decent cloths today. There isn’t much you can do when dressing moose however.
I have to admit I’ve talked over “God Save the Queen” many times, even danced. But that was the Sex Pistols version.
