Golden Corral would be in the area that was hit. 24th and Rangeline - I would not want to be there when it hit. Home Depot sustained major damage - 4 blocks away.
Their house should be fine - hope they were at home rather than the Golden Corral!!
I worked at the Joplin Public Library 1984-5. Joplin is a sprawling place about 3-4 miles long and at least that wide. Looks like the North part where the library, newspaper, airport etc are is untouched.
My kids texted me and said they were ok.
Probably, the building where Bonnie and Clyde were involved in a shootout with police in the 1930’s is probably damaged or gone. Just a guess as it was near the hospital.
Had begun following this thread late last night, and just fell asleep without posting, but was happy to wake up and read that your MIL/SIL are ok.
God bless your BIL and others now as he and they go forward with the rescue/recovery mission.
Local news says 30% houses with damage which is fairly accurate I’d say - some would have just a small amount of damage. No where near 75%
bump for later read...
I work in IT for Mercy and was on a conference call till later last night. We are gonna be busy....
Continuing to pray for your friends.
So glad your MIL is safe, RR.
The reports in this morning do appear closer to 30 percent or so. Still, a HUGE amount of devastation for such a massive city. If it was truly 75 percent destroyed, it would have been the widest tornado ever recorded most likely. Hardly any are bigger than a mile wide.
But those that are even close are horrific. This is insane and beyond awful....can’t really even put into words what this has to have done to an amazing town.
Did the old alcott school get hit?
Did the old alcott school get hit?
Some areas obviously 100%.
Son says it is dark there now and starting to rain.
I’ve just read through the thread and am sending prayers up for everyone affected by this terrible tornado. RR, I’m so glad your MIL is okay. May God bless everyone working to help those affected.
So glad you heard that she is safe.
And I'm actually the kind of guy that loves a good World War every now and again, with it's 40 million dead and rotting in fields somewhere. Idi Amin was a favorite, and I LOVE the cannibalism.
Good news, man. Got worried with your niece cut off mid sentence.
I saw your post last night on this thread and couldn't help but think what a brave thing it was to do to try to shelter the cat in all that chaos. I wondered how the cat reacted to the situation? Am I correct in thinking your SIL's home was not directly hit?
Their house is about 8 blocks north of the tornado’s path. The neighbor across the street had a tree fall into the livingroom, but my brother’s house only had a branch on the roof. There were trees and powerlines down all around them and a couple of houses down the street lost parts of their roofs, but no real damage in their neighborhood. My brother was out all last night and today clearing roads. He said that there wasn’t much point in searching some blocks for survivors, but he understood that luck has a funny way of showing itself.
Mother of Mercy. I don’t think I have ever heard anything so frightening. They must have really gotten blown around if they wound up laying on top of each other. Jeez louise.
