A new IBOPE Zogby poll shows Atlanta businessman Herman Cain vaulting into the No. 1 front-runner position among active candidates as the choice to win the GOP presidential nomination in 2012.
Cain, a longtime Pillsbury executive who later became chairman of the U.S. Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City, was the preferred choice of 14 percent of the likely Republican primary voters polled.
His showing placed second only to New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, who got 17 percent. Christie, however, has insisted repeatedly that he will not be running for president in 2012. Ron Paul placed third with 10 percent, followed by former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, who had 9 percent.
Pollster John Zogby told Newsmax.TV in an exclusive interview that the sudden rise of Cain shows the degree of restlessness among GOP faithful, given their current options.
Hes not well known. Hes very plain speaking, Zogby said. But when someone enters the forum, as he did during that debate, and rises to the top, its kind of like Donald Trump, its kind of like Chris Christie: We dont like the field, this is a guy that we can believe in.
Cain was considered the winner of the recent Fox News debate held in South Carolina. His memorable applause line came when a panelist pointed out that he lacked experience holding public office. Cain pointed out that almost everyone elected to national office in Washington, D.C., had prior public service experience.

Cain’s formal announcement for the Presidency is today at noon in Centennial Olympic Park in Atlanta. Up to now it has just been an “exploratory committee”.
I will be there.
I’m considering him my first choice at this point. Still early, and a lot can shake out between now and the primaries. But so far, I’m pleased with him.
Having been behind Fred Thompson in ‘08, I’m a little gun shy...
I’m going to the Herman Cain rally in downtown Atlanta today.
I’m curious to see how CNN reports the announcement. Their headquarters are located right across the street. They can’t miss it.
I hope he gets to the top of the ticket. I was musing about a ticket recently of Cain and Backman; or Cain and Rubio or even Cain and The Huck (for VP) only. I think any of those could win. I fear he may just get high enough to become a VP pick for one of the establishment GOP candidates like Romney or God forbid Daniels. Just like with McCain, toss the conservatives a bone and give them a conservative for running mate and banisment into obscurity, win or lose.
Christie, King (NY Congressman) are anti gun and not for me; Palin is a lighting rod and the press would make it an election of her. We need a candidate who can shed light on The Won, not become the issue themselves.
Wait.....?
Interesting. But I would question the demographics of the poll. Hard to believe that ‘middle America’ would be so willing to put Christie (by reputation only) so high in a poll over Palin, Pawlenty, and Bachmann. Cain, I can see.
Absolutely he is not the guy. Christie is a fat loud-mouth who loves to hear himself talk. He hasn’t done ANYTHING here in NJ, NOTHING!
It is hardly “stunning” that Republicans want to nominate...a Republican....for a change.
Cain is the real deal. He speaks incredibly clear, is extremely intelligent and in a debate, he is razor sharp.
The opposition had better be paying attention. They are in for the challenge of their careers.
A black man and a fat man. Can't be?
An articulate black southern conservative experienced businessman is unacceptable to the yankees
Charles Krauthammer and Karen Tumulty (the one with the horse face) made the declaration
Cain as VP would be a very bad idea.
Wish I could join you!!!
///I will be there.\\\
Mee too! Should be another several hundred thousand supporters for him. He gains like that when he speaks.
Christie is great at confronting Union thugs, but beyond that he supports gun control, appointed a radical Islamist to a judgeship, is for amnesty for illegal aliens and has brought into the Global Warming nonsense to some extent. Yes there is no such thing as a ‘Prefect’ Candidate, but I don’t see how Christie can even be considered a good conservative candidate.
Thou protests too much.
AND...like Trump, she's not afraid to take on OBozo to ensure that his shortcomings/mistakes see the light of day.
CNN will take notice. If they do not, they may suffer the label of “Racist”! (Gulp)
