New satellite images have shown the alarming speed at which Pakistan is constructing a weapons-grade nuclear reactor. The aerial images, taken on April 20, show the rapid building progress of the fourth reactor to produce plutonium in Pakistan's Khushab facility. The site was barren in 2009 and the facility 'costing billions' was undetectable by satellite just 17 months ago, but has since grown at an alarming rate. The facility in Khushab is the fastest growing nuclear program in the world, with the speed of the latest reactor's construction prompting concern from U.S. officials

Your tax dollars at work.
How does Pakistan get the billions to run this weapons program?
Foreign aid from Western countries like the US, Canada, Britain, etc. Part of which also gets diverted to help support the Taliban fight our own troops.
Cut these backstabbers off, now.
no doubt an undertaking to counter their neighbors in India.
We are paying for our enemies swords.
Or maybe they’ve just taken a large order from Iran... a ‘rush’ order.
ROFL! “Obama is awesome”. i had forgotten about that. it would make a great bumpersticker. liberals would take it literally, so wouldn’t key my car, but people like you, would know what it really meant !
...it is also worth noting, that aside from our tax dollars financing this, that it has been being contructed for over a year, yet i heard nothing about this from our dedicated American journalists. ...it still amazes me what doesn’t get reported here... (except indirectly in FR...)
The lack of oversight is stunning.
Defense Secretary Robert Gates and others have warned that cutting off relations or aid to Pakistan would be dangerous because the government and military of Pakistan could fall under more influence from Islamic radicals who are sympathetic to Al Qaeda.
It is also feared any nuclear weapons made at the facility could fall into the hands of hardline militants.
Cutting off aid to Pakistan is dangerous because Al-Qaeda may wield more influence as a result? Gates in as many words is saying that we are being blackmailed.
As for the reference that nukes may fall into the hands of hardline militants, withdrawing aid will not be the cause. This is a shakedown.
The Pakis were not told of the Bin Laden raid for the obvious reason. He would have been tipped off, which may have been our last chance to deal with him.
When you have to pay off people to do certain things which they wouldn't do otherwise, they are not your friend.
I realize that in a complex world pragmatism is needed at times, but not all of the time.
I'm not somebody who attempts to determine doomsday, but on the other hand the progression of technology will enable rogue countries to construct atomic devices. It's not a matter of if but when.
The concept of Mutual Assured Destruction is history. The Soviets were the evil empire, not the stupid empire. Despite the bellicose posturing, the gang at the Kremlin did not want to die. They enjoyed the perks that came with being more equal than others.
Jihadists are of a different stock. They want to die. They want others to die with them, the more the better.
I hope we have extensive intelligence which will enable us to neutralize Pakistan if things go bad.
We had better get very busy with anti-missile defenses, despite Russian protestations.
Early on, it was hinted that the Paki warheads were disassembled and the elements stored in different parts of the country. And that we knew where each piece was and had them under surveillance.
I presume that is part of the agreement that Bush hammered out with Musharraf.
Iran has crap. This is US money.
A favorable situation I would say.
I presume that is part of the agreement that Bush hammered out with Musharraf.
Both are gone. Pakistan makes me feel uneasy. I would feel much better if we did not have this current administration.
That said, North Korea doesn't have 'crap' either - makes no difference. In a democracy it matters - in a totalitarian state - the rulers can spend money on anything they damn well want - and the people can starve. I would like to be comforted by your logic - but I'm not...
Aside from Pakistan, how many other situations could you say that about?
I'd make the over/under -- one hundred and fourteen.
Besides what you claim is only a theory and an utterly silly one. What I am telling you about US bankrolling Pakistani establishment IS FACT. If Iranian regime had the money they would use it to tighten their stranglehold over Iran, use the money to fund their own nuclear program and bolster their defense against US and Israel not gift it to a neighbor who is a US ally. You theory holds no water because its is devoid of any fact.
