I would rather they take away the right to vote for people on public assistance. If you are getting a free ride, you do not have a right to steer the car.
We used to have these idiotic discussions about the electoral college... in middle school. Then we learned that the United States is plursl and not singular and it made sense.

OK Ezra, how bout this? How bout you get one vote for every dollar in federal taxes you pay? THATS what I call weighting.
Not a bad idea. Here's how I would weight it: Taxpayers get one vote each. Non taxpayers get zero votes each. Uniformed military members get 1.5 votes each, all other government employees get .5 votes each.
I've long thought something similar, though a bit different, and with some modifications.
Every citizen gets 1 vote to start.
1 vote for every $1000 net paid in federal income tax (subtracting any assistance or credits, like EITC)
1 vote for every year served in the military.
1 vote for every year where the citizen served in a combat zone

Klein is inadvertently wandering into territory that he's not fully aware of. But sure, pry open Pandora's box, and see what you get.
In fact, I'll start.
Voting should be limited to (or the voting power increased at a certain percentage for) veterans, mothers, people with jobs, landowners, or business owners.
Voting should be denied to felons, people on public assistance, deadbeat parents, and people without identification cards that prove which category they're in.

This would be the end of our republic as we know it.
Once you open the door to weighted voting, then those in power will change the criteria of how votes are weighted, to remain in power endlessly.
If liberals were able to do this, they would give greater weight to liberals. They would give greater votes to favored groups, perhaps based on the liberal views of groups which were oppressed. They would give greater votes to those who are poor and dependent on the federal government, because after all, such people “need help”, and in the liberal view, should have more say in what “help” they get.
They would institutionalize the “What’s the Matter with Kansas” idea, in which liberals lament that Kansans vote Republican and doing so is against their own economic interests. If there were weighted voting, they would devalue the votes of places which don’t vote “correctly”.
Elections as we know them would cease to exist in such a system.
Liberal radical types sure don’t have any respect or appreciation of our constitional republic, and the manner in which power is divided and exercised, do they?
Yes, if you don't pay taxes, or get back more than you put it, than should be a disqualifier.
Also, voter fraud, if proven, is a lifetime ban on voting.

They have done this in some local elections to boost minority representation.
Oh, that Ezra, always kidding around. I remember when he put the fake dog sh_t on the floor at the Washington Post’s farewell party. They ran it as one of his stories. I think it was up for a Pullitzer.
