Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich might not want to count on a presidential endorsement from South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley.
In an interview with CNN Tuesday, Haley sharply admonished Gingrich for his comments over the weekend disparaging the Medicare plan proposed by House Budget Chairman Paul Ryan as "radical change" and "right-wing social engineering."
The remarks opened a floodgate of conservative criticism, with elite opinion writers on down to Iowa voters accusing Gingrich of throwing his own party under the bus and making it easier for Democrats to attack the Ryan plan.
Haley, whose promise to endorse a presidential candidate has made her a key power broker in the Republican primary fight, joined in the chorus Tuesday and said she is "terribly disappointed" in Gingrich.
"What he said was absolutely unfortunate," Haley told CNN in a phone interview. "Here you've got Representative Ryan trying to bring common sense to this world of insanity, and Newt absolutely cut him off at the knees."
"When you have a conservative fighting for real change, the last thing we need is a presidential candidate cutting him off at the knees," she added.

“Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich might not want to count on a presidential endorsement from South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley. “
Also, not from any other thinking conservative.
In addition to this issue, there is his defense of Obamacare and support of the Global Warming Wingnuts.
Newt is a self-destructive egomaniac. So many people have told him he’s “smart”, that he made the mistake of believing it. I’m glad he’s gone.
Exactly, and it didn't take him long. And has Newt ever porced up! He must be eating meals with Al Gore.
Mitt endorsed her after the results were in./s
I think you undersell how important Iowa is, but I agree that SC will be extremely important this cycle. I also know that SC has a moderate party elite group that will likely publicly go against Haley. I’ve heard that Carroll Campbell’s little silver spoon loser son has endorsed Huntsman in fact. That weasel Bauer will probably do that too.
Would love to see Haley throw in with Cain or Palin if she runs or someone that will just gripe the elites to no end.
Or run as a Pelosi Democrat.
Newt is stuck somewhere in 1995, IMO.
I think he is brilliant——but not living in 2011 or really prepared for 2012 & beyond.
I still want Trump.
Again, we agree on SC's importance this year..and moreso, as I mentioned, because Florida will probably be right behind it. Haley's very popular here...and you could easily see a scenario wherein Haley endorses the SC winner...and then Marco and Jeb and Scott also do the same...for thesame person..and that could be the ball game..
I’d rather have SC voters inspired by Haley decide the nominee than ethanol crazed Iowa caucus goers for sure.
But regardless of why Iowa is important, it is important. That’s why we have the ethanol scam to begin with.
Agree..and why I want to see at least ONE GOP candidate go into Iowa and call for an immediate END to federal ethanol subsidies..
Actually, to be fair, Romney was one of the first, if not the first, national figure to endorse Haley. Palin's support came shortly before the first primary round, where she barely missed an outright majority in a 4-way race.
The big difference is that when the s*** hit the fan with all of the (to this date still unproven) allegations against Haley, it was Palin who publicly stood by her, while Romney did not say one word (either for or against her).
One would think, and hope, the GOP is wise enough to know the cloth Gingrich is cut from...perhaps, that’s the problem.
She’s still holding to that, isn’t she? Simply calling someone out as not fit for office doesn’t mean she’s giving her endorsment to someone else.
Myth Romney = the new John McLame..
I've said this many times, the guy is definitely an egomaniac. At CPAC, even Dick Cheney just walked out on the stage as did all the other speakers.....not Newt.....he walks in to the soundtrack of "Eye of the Tiger" from the back and shakes hands all the way to the stage.
Acting like a rock star...The guy really turns me off
"Newt,
Up until recently, I had tremendous respect for you, especially when you were House speaker.
When you decided to compromise conservative principles, join forces with Pelosi on Cap and Trade, and sandbag conservatives such as Palin and Ryan; no Conservatives will ever vote for you.
You have proved to Tea Party Conservatives that you're just another typical, lying, back stabbing RINO.
Regards,
Xxxxxx Xxxxx"
What is this, a mystery?
If so, I already know whodunnit.
