Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich might not want to count on a presidential endorsement from South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley.
In an interview with CNN Tuesday, Haley sharply admonished Gingrich for his comments over the weekend disparaging the Medicare plan proposed by House Budget Chairman Paul Ryan as "radical change" and "right-wing social engineering."
The remarks opened a floodgate of conservative criticism, with elite opinion writers on down to Iowa voters accusing Gingrich of throwing his own party under the bus and making it easier for Democrats to attack the Ryan plan.
Haley, whose promise to endorse a presidential candidate has made her a key power broker in the Republican primary fight, joined in the chorus Tuesday and said she is "terribly disappointed" in Gingrich.
"What he said was absolutely unfortunate," Haley told CNN in a phone interview. "Here you've got Representative Ryan trying to bring common sense to this world of insanity, and Newt absolutely cut him off at the knees."
"When you have a conservative fighting for real change, the last thing we need is a presidential candidate cutting him off at the knees," she added.

Question: I thought Haley had emulated Iowa Gov Branstead..promised NOT to endorse a candidate until after the primary..
Newt went into total Campaign Self-Destruct Mode this weekend. Being a self-destructive type of guy, it’s no surprise. ...although I didn’t expect it to happen only a few days after announcing his candidacy.
It ain't going to work here in South Carolina, Newt. We're familiar with spineless, mealy mouthed, RINO rat bastards...
We've got Lindsey Graham.
Gingrich Campaign grand opening.
Gingrich Campaign grand closing.
Haley said she will endorse. link
Hopefully she will make a habit of NOT emulating Terry Branstad!
WHO has she endorsed?
My thoughts exactly!!! The speed with which he self destructed was breath taking.
“WHO has she endorsed?”
That’s my question. I know during her campaign, she was endorsed by both Palin and Romney. It’s probably going to be one of them.
This is going to be a major test and we’re going to have to see who she goes with. I know Palin spoke at one of her rallies; did Romney do the same?
Please, Gov. Haley, endorse Sarah (when she announces!)!.
Thanks..I’d read that article when it first came out, and to me it sounded like she would NOT endorse, in order to give all candidates the opportunity to reach the SC GOP voters. There was some thought that if she endorsed early, some candidates, like Romney, might skip the race. Of course, when that wa written, many thought that Palin would enter the race, and of course, Palin was the one who got Haley name recognition..I think if Palin doesn’t run, Haley will stay out, or she might name 2-3 she doesn’t like...
She said again, more recently, that she would endorse.
So I think she'll endorse -- probable not until after the new year, though.
Like I’ve said so many times before, give a fool enough rope and he will hang himself every time!
In 2008 she endorsed Romney. This cycle she's pledged to endorse only after SC voters had plenty of time to see the candidates and form their own opinions - my take is she doesn't feel like people need to be told how to vote.
Again, thanks for the info..SC will be very important this election cycle. Iowa is a caucus state..it’s as much organizational ability as it is an indication of voter support; NH will go for Romney..SC will be the first real test, and if my state ( Florida) moves up to right after SC, then whoever wins SC will have a BIG leg up...and could run the table..
What did the RNC have to do with this? I could well be wrong, but somehow I sense a tie in here somewhere.
At least, that what I inferred from his post.
“Gingrich Campaign grand opening.
Gingrich Campaign grand closing.”
So true. I believe there’s a strong chance that Newt and his mouth have not only destroyed himself but done serious damage to any possible Repub candidate. Ask me if I’m surprised.
And yet, if the RNC wanted another loser like McCain, they sure had one in Flukie Newt!
