IMF head Dominique Strauss-Kahn, facing sexual assault charges in New York, was the front-runner in the latest opinion polls to win next year's presidential election in France and replace incumbent Nicolas Sarkozy.
The 62-year-old Socialist, who served as French finance minister in the late 1990s, left for Washington in late 2007 to head the International Monetary Fund, just as the global economy was hit by the worst downturn since World War Two.
The polls have consistently shown Strauss-Kahn, who has yet to officially declare his candidacy, trouncing Sarkozy and leading all other potential challengers in the presidential election next April and May.
That was until the shock news of his arrest in New York over an alleged sexual assault on a hotel maid. Prosecutors charged him on Sunday with a criminal sexual act, attempted rape and unlawful imprisonment. Strauss-Kahn's lawyer said he would plead not guilty.
No stranger to controversy, Strauss-Kahn was investigated by the IMF in 2008 over possible abuse of power involving a brief affair with an economist at the Fund. He was cleared of abusing power and apologized publicly for "a serious error of judgment."
News of his arrest at New York's JFK airport could hardly have come at a more critical moment.
France's Socialist Party, the main opposition party, holds a "primary" contest to pick a runner for the presidential race and candidates have to register soon. Strauss-Kahn was widely expected to declare his intentions by late June.

One of Nicolas Sarkozy's key campaign slogans was: "work more to earn more" to improve the economy putting an end to the old imposed 35-hour week; whereas, a landmark legislation in '08 eliminated the 35-hour cap.
In March, eight hundred French riot police succeeded in breaking up a dock strike organized by the General Confederation of Labor (CGT) trade union.
However, in April, French riot police were threatening their own labor action in response to an order banning them from drinking on the job. The police union said, "having a glass of wine or beer ["a little quarter liter of wine"] taken with a meal while on duty" was not just a tradition but their legal right. The Interior Ministry ordered the crackdown on drinking on the job after photographs appeared in the French press of CRS officers in full riot gear drinking beer back in October while deployed at a protest by high school students who were against pension reforms. [you ask students and pensions?]. The photos, to my knowledge, did not show "un beef dip" being held in the other hand of officers while drinking their from "legal right".
May 6, 2011: Netanyahu said after talks with French President Sarkozy that France wants the new Palestinian government to recognize Israel as a Jewish state. "What I heard from President Sarkozy is that they must recognize Israel as the state of the Jewish people," Netanyahu said after a meeting he described as "good, far-ranging and friendly.."
Sarkozy has also succeeded in banning the burkha, "worn out of fear, subjugation, and indoctrination" not out of freedom of choice; but many Muslims claim this law is a violation of human rights for Muslim women.
An immediate reaction from the Muslim community in London called for Muslims around the world.. "drive the French language into the gutter where it belongs."
Muslims in London have said their children should not be forced to learn the French language and have started a campaign to replace French in both the primary and secondary school curriculum with Arabic.
"A votre sante!", I would say to the French President.
Maybe he can get Kobe Bryant’s lawyer.
It was the stress of the job, besides, in the land of Bubba, who knew it was a crime?
It was Turbotaxes’ fault! /sar
They need to stop appointing the sex-crazed maniacs to World Financial leadership. This is not the first time this guy has been accused, and then of course, Wolfowitz had his own sex scandal at the World Bank.
Is that their cleaning lady on the right?
Did Gore known as “Mr. Stone” aka “the crazed sex poodle” have a lawyer? What happened with that hotel masseuse scenario? He still seems to be enjoying the good life.
You’re bad! but not as bad as what went with that photo description where I found it and did not copy.
At least they didn’t use an old photo of him shaking hands with Bush in 2008, like the New York post did.
Here’s a more recent photo:

putting the “stamp” of la france on America.
Just further proof that European “elites” should not be “mixing” with the “help”.
I now could see Marine Le Pen become France’s first woman president.
I wouldn’t cross the street to piss on this puke, but if you watch this video, the still photo isn’t what it appears.
Class and Classless.
So on the right, who is the guy in drag?
As if The Wookies azz wasn’t big enough, she had to sew a bow onto the GP Medium. (GP Medium: tent, general purpose for you civilians).
DSK has hired Benjamin Brafman, a top NY criminal defense lawyer who represented Sean P Diddy and got him off.
A NY jury might vote P Diddy not guilty, but an arrogant French elitist, not probable.
Look for a change in lawyers.
