College grads become 'boomerangs,' return home after graduation

Published: May 13, 2011

RALEIGH, N.C. - After college graduation, some students will begin their jobs, others will pursue another degree, but a growing number will head back where they started – home.

According to a poll by Twentysomething, Inc., 85 percent of college graduates will move home. That’s up from 67 percent in 2006.

Brian Cutchin, a North Carolina State University senior set to graduate Saturday, is one of those so-called “boomerangs.”

“I didn't think it would be this tough, I thought getting a degree from NC State would be good, but I guess with the economy downturn that happened, things changed,” he said.

NC State’s Career Center Director Carol Shroeder said she’s familiar with the term “boomerang.”

"I feel so sorry for their parents. It's very difficult. Obviously it's a good way to save money. It's a good way to get support,” she said.

Shroeder said she’s received reports that employers are increasing their hiring, but she said it’s to early to say for sure. While she said the number of jobs posted online is up, those positions may not be exactly what students want.

"Some students say, 'Well, if I take a job well beneath my educational capabilities then I'm doomed forever.’ No, I think the hiring market will be much more understanding of why you had to take a job that was not a particularly good job,” she said.

...what proportion of these students (and their parents) voted for nobama?

To those who voted for Obama, I hope they learned something from their thoughtless naivity, but I really doubt it.

As a group, students pretty well brought this tragic era on themselves and the country and they helped bring tremendous suffering to uncountable millions of others as well.

84 percent of students vote for Obama, take to the streets in celebration

"Over 90 percent of Penn students registered on campus showed up to vote today, according to AJ Shiera, executive board member of Penn Leads the Vote. Just over 84 percent of students registered in the 14 divisions on and near campus voted for Senator Barack Obama"
Election 2008: Second-largest youth voter turnout in American history

"Sixty-six percent of young voters cast their ballot for Barack Obama, the largest-ever showing for a presidential candidate in this age group. Young people preferred Obama to John McCain by a two-to-one ratio, according to a survey of young voters conducted by Declare Yourself, a nonpartisan initiative dedicated to youth voters, and Luntz Maslansky Strategic Research, a market research company, and released Nov. 6."

“Young people absolutely made the difference in this election,” said Erika Johansson, a project coordinator for Declare Yourself. “Without them, he would have lost the election.”

The one thing in the US that's in abundant over supply is College Graduates.

Burdened with debt, few marketable skills...and their so-called "loser" buddies who went straight into a trade are only about 25% unemployed vs 85%.

I'd bet 1/2 the waitresses in the US have a degree...along with the beauticians.

It's as big a scam as "real estate will always go up".

I couldn’t agree with you, more.

And just to be clear, I do not consider Criminal Justice a “garbage degree”. I leave that label for other “degrees” such as “Journalism”, “Communications”, “Social Work”, “Multi-media” ANY of the “Liberal Arts”, “Basket Weaving” and so on.

And I agree, it’s not what you do in college, it’s what you do in life.

If I had a college degree an the ability to become an officer in the military it would be a no brainer.

You’re welcome and thank you back.

Whenever I read or hear the horrible stats for unemployment or economic problems I wonder how many are liberals or conservatives.

It’s mindset and instinct, IMHO. Whenever someone around me is complaining I cannot resist asking whether or not they voted for 0bama. If they did, my next statement is “what did they expect?”

I have a Democrat printers union member next door to me and even he did not vote for zero.

Our youngest son is living at home, going to school full time for a trade, working part-time and helps around the house, which works out well for us too, I don’t want my husband on the roof cleaning the woodburner anymore.

Parents should NEVER let their 20-something college graduates back in the house.

Never.

The possibility of moving home after college never entered my mind. I do remember my first off-campus apartment: I shared a room with my roommate, just as I had done in college. You never see that now—in college or out.

Pat yourself on the back and I hope I will be joining you in a year. My daughter has one year left in her PharmD program. Four years ago she was majoring in biology, looked around and realized the medical field offered money and job security and chose pharmacy with an eye on doing hospital critical care pharmacy. It’s been a long six years counting her undergraduate time, but the end is in sight and there are jobs and they pay very well.

On the other hand, a young man my daughter went to school with graduated two years ago with a degree in Czech languages and studies and his wife has a degree in theater arts. She is now a secretary at the local university and he is an attendance clerk at our high school. What were they thinking?

I'm sure I misinterpreted your “garbage” degree comment, because having a brother who was an ME major, I know that nobody can coast through that major and get their degree. I did see people coast through my major, though, so being defensive is in part my fault.

A hard worker is a hard worker, and while the job market is tough for recent grads, I also know that there are jobs available for those willing to do work that they consider beneath them. I did it because I had to do it to save money before starting my ‘career’, so to speak. Reading of these kids going to live back home just makes me sad for our future as a country. It will take people like your son to help lead the private sector, and being under 40, I'm trying to do my own part.

Having him live at home to learn a trade is smart of you both in terms of economics. Allowing him to live at home and not work once he learns his trade will not help him, though.

I was raised by two rabid California libs.

They bitched constantly about how awful it was being "stuck with G-D kids" and how much we cost.

As soon as I was old enough, I left for an out-of-state university and worked my way through school. Got my commission in the US military and now I'm a Field grade Officer and combat veteran. I never even looked back.

Good grief, I can't even fathom being a "boomerang". Granted, my experience wasn't everyone's, but the thought of going back brings revulsion on many levels.

I shared an off-campus room as well, but I was lucky he was and still is a brother to me. The fact that he was a black athlete, and I was a white student, made it somewhat weird to some people in our mostly white campus, plus, I was a member of a fraternity that had no black guys in it. To me, he was just Jon, though. The best part was when I’d bring him over to “rush” night just so we could both get a tasty catered meal. By the end, he was buddies with a lot of my frat friends, and yes, we did live in the same room for 2 years of college. We know more about each other than many married couples!

Is your daughter paying for her own school? I ask, because it does matter, and not all students can afford 6 years of college for a Pharm D, which was a solid choice for her, by the way.

My son and his friends all just got “garbage degrees”—history, communications, etc.

Three of them (son included) are renting a condo that I own. They all got jobs immediately, though not “college jobs”. I told them that if they got work, showed up on time, every day, and did a good job, they would be fine.

One young man has gotten two promotions in 6 months and is supervising a crew of 10.

My son has been given the keys to the small shop he has been working at for 6 months, and runs it in the absence of the owner.

The third was a keyholder at a retail store within 1 month of being hired, and has just moved on to a better opportunity out of retail.

None of them would have had as much incentive to get off of their butts and work at Some Job, Any Job, if they didn’t have the landlord (ME!) holding out his hand every month, and the utility bill to pay if they want the lights and the internet to stay on. I think moving home is not good, particularly for those with a bit of a “slacker” attitude.

The jury is still out if the college degrees were worth it, but there are jobs out there, at least in my area.
