California Hotel Groups Flat Out Reject Fitted Sheet Requirement in Proposed Housekeeping Bill

Fitted or flat?

That’s the weighty question facing the California Legislature, which is considering a bill that would regulate what type of sheets can be used on hotel bed mattresses across the state.

Supporters of the bill argue it will reduce worker injuries by eliminating the need for workers to repetitively lift extremely heavy mattresses when making beds. They contend that flat sheets cause workers to strain their backs, shoulders and wrists, and are often responsible for repetitive motion injuries.

State Bill 432, sponsored by Sen. Kevin de Leon (D-Los Angeles), also calls for the use of long-handled tools like mops and dusters so housekeepers do not have to get down on their hands and knees to clean bathroom floors.

“Just by using fitted sheets you could cut the number of lifts in half, and we think that would go a long way in preventing worker injury,” said Leigh Shelton, a spokesperson for UNITE HERE, a union that represents California hospitality workers.

But the California Hotel and Lodging Association says replacing existing sheets to comply with the bill could cost between $30 million and $50 million.

“At a time when California’s looking at over a $26 billion budget, you would kind of think that the legislature had other things to worry about,” said Randi Knott, of the California Hotel and Lodging Association.

Considering this is California, it's unsurprising in the least bit.

I’m really hoping it gets voted in. Let those Leftists regulate CA out of existence and show everyone else just how destructive government sprawl truly is.

What’s the useful lifetime of those linens, forty or so washes through the sanitizing systems used at hotels? Something like this could be made a recommendation for new replacement linens, and there would be no waste. Why not put it up to a vote of the housekeepers at each hotel — some may still prefer that there be only one kind of sheet so there is one less kind of bed linen to sort.

Most likely generous contributions from the Fitted Sheet Manufactures Association. You don't get legislation for free you know. ;~))

Many years ago, a question to Ann Landers produced the largest number of replies ever to her column...and this was in the days BEFORE email, when you had to write the letter, put in in an envelope, put a stamp on it, and go out and mail it. The responses were in the tens of thousands...if not more, and came in for several months, until Landers was forced to announce in her column that she would not read, not print, any more comments about the topic.

So what was the question that so engaged the American public?

Well, a housewife wanted to know if, when inserting a new roll of toilet paper, should the start of the roll drop away from the outside ( away from the wall) or from the inside ( near the wall)

No dount the California legislature will take up this question soon..it's worth of their consideration..

That should be true, but nevertheless I still find myself amazed at such impossible stupidity.
