City of Dallas keeps $2000 found by honest teen

DALLAS — Dallas will keep $2,000 found by a teenager in a parking lot last February.

The money will go into the city's general fund — not back to Plano high school student Ashley Donaldson, who found the cash in an envelope at the Pavillion Shopping Center in North Dallas.

"I don't regret making the decision I did," she said. "I feel proud of myself for giving the money back. It's one of the biggest decisions of my life."

The 15-year-old Shepton High School student spotted the money on the ground and took it to a nearby Chase Bank.

Over the last three months, the bank and Dallas police have tried to find the owner, but have had no luck.

On Tuesday, police said under a new city policy, the unclaimed money will go into Dallas' general fund — not back to the person who found it, as in years past.

Those tax revenue wasting apparatchiks, that call themselves "managers", at the City of Dallas will prolly give the money to some illegal Mezzicans who will use it to buy tequila and ammo for a fiesta celebrating the birth of another little anchor baby.

Or, more likely, the Dallas City Manager will use it to re-decorate her office.

This is a nice uplifting story. Next time a kid finds a lost item, they will have such a distrust and anger at the Gov’t, that it will be the last place they will turn the money into. This has to be the biggest kick in the teeth I have seen money hungry Gov’t officials do. Give some reward or better yet, give the finder all the cash. What right do these officials have to the money anyway.

Even Texas, esp. in the urban cesspools of Houston, Austin, and Dallas (my home), is infested with libscum.

And if that doesn’t scare you (general “you” there, not NFB in particular), well, it should.

/a concerned Texan

PS If it was found in Plano, why is it going to Dallas?

Don’t worry kid. God and the rest of us know you did the right thing. You will be rewarded.

As to the stingy government, just how often do you think people are going to turn in found stacks of cash now?

Now some poor person who loses their hard earned money won't get it back because who in their right mind will turn it in?

I hope the City of Dallas and the Dallas PD are embarassed into changing their "new" policy back to the old policy.

I think they have a “Police Association”, but Texas is a “right to work” state so they can’t collectively bargain. I
believe that’s the case but I could be wrong. I was once... in 1985... i think ;)

Ashley did the right thing but her family needed the money. There was no reward, but a thank you or “we appreciate” or whatever the congratulatory redundant answer would be. I believe in karma and that family will receive some blessing.

I seem to recall under UCC that the finder has to wait 30 days and if the owner is not found, the finder gets the money.

Who changed the law in Dallas and when how was this announced.

What goes hand-in-hand with these UCC policies is also the checking accounts that are abandoned over the course of time. It add up to a significant amount of money. So since abandoned checking and savings accounts are more frequent, I suppose the law was changed to address this pile of cash and not the "found cash" represented in this story.

Thanks police. You really look great stiffing a young citizen out of finders fee.
