The Board of Education has agreed to move forward on a plan to eliminate sugary beverages and make Florida the first state in the nation to ban chocolate milk in public schools.
Board member John Padget, a former schools superintendent from South Florida, has been pressing his colleagues for a year to cut out most beverages besides water, pure juice and white, low-fat milk to help fight childhood obesity.
High schools would be allowed to sell some types of diet sodas and some other low-calorie, low-sugar drinks.
Although board members tabled the issue last spring most said they preferred to wait to see if the federal government would take the lead on the issue they decided Tuesday to ask doctors and researchers for their opinions.
Then, they said, they'll have a more in-depth discussion at their next meeting on Dec. 17.
"When you think about it, we probably have a million overweight or obese children in our schools," Padget said. "I think the clock is ticking in terms of personal health."
One reason the board chose to move forward was the realization that the federal government make take years to revamp its rules on what foods should and shouldn't be allowed to be sold in elementary-, middle- and high schools.
Also, board members learned that the Washington D.C. school district recently announced it is cutting out flavored milk, which tends to be high in sugar.
On Tuesday, an official from the National Association of State Boards of Education urged the Florida Board of Education to make changes now.
"Otherwise your kindergarteners will be in fifth grade before they see any changes," said Elizabeth Walker, director of the agency's Center for Safe and Healthy Schools.

Nanny State PING!
The Food Nazis continue their march to erode Freedom “for our own good.”
Power corrupts. Absolute power creates a liberal.
How about more exercise?
On the bright side, the chocolate allowance has been increased from 30 grams to 24 grams. [/s]
They’re going to ban Orange Juice from schools in Florida? That has a much sugar as pop.
>>How about more exercise?<<
That just creates more smug liberals.

As a result of the trade barriers, sugar has become much more expensive in the U.S. than in other countries; Canada for instance.
As a result of the high sugar prices, much of the junk food industry uses high fructose corn syrup as a sweetener, instead of expensive sugar.
As a result of the HFCS, more and more people are getting obese.
As a result of increasing obesity numbers; social engineers, and health NAZIS have been busy banning sugary drinks.
As a result of too much interference from the nanny state, and Big Brother ....
Besides, this is pretty much junk science. You cut back too much on milk fat, or do things that reduce its consumption by children who do not yet have a lactase deficiency, what you'll do us reduce their consumption of the natural cholesterol reduction drugs found in milk AND, worst of all, deprive the body of it's trigger for production of anti-triglyceride enzymes.
The kids won't even look fat but they'll have triglyceride levels so high their blood will barely flow through their veins.
This information is so readily available on the internet from reputable research facilities and organizations you're almost forced to conclude that the sponsors want to kill the kids.

Are they going to search lunch boxes?
What happens when someone starts complaining about the ‘chemicals’ in diet soda? It is possible that they are more harmful than the sugar in regular soda, depending on what you read.
Tastes nasty too (my opinion). Have you ever seen anyone lose weight by switching to diet soda from regular soda? I haven’t. Some feel that the overly sweet taste in diet soda actually causes people to crave more sweetening in foods, to say nothing of the additional sodium in diet drinks.
Nanny State indeed! This will backfire along with all the other stupid Obozo regime regulations.
They're going to force all this "healthy food" that the kids will end up not eating. I predict the final result will be an actual increase in the junk food consumption, because kids will either take snacks to school or else go home from school starving and load up because the "healthy" school menu was not appetizing.
Good thing, too; they start out with chocolate milk, and before you know it, they’ve graduated to double cheeseburgers with large fries.
Oh, the humanity!
I also hope to see Putnam as our governor of senator in the near future.
Thanks for the ping!
You know this one really doesn’t bother me.
Unflavored milk or tap water was all we were offered in school, that’s all my kids could get-—no big deal.
Quit worrying about their girth....
START worrying about their brains.
