House Speaker John Boehner is insisting tax increases are "off the table" in negotiations with the Obama administration and congressional Democrats on extending the federal debt limit.
The Ohio Republican tells NBC's "Today" show "everything else is on the table." Boehner (BAY'-nur) appeared a day after telling the Economic Club of New York he wants trillions of dollars in spending cuts as part of legislation allowing the government to continue borrowing beyond the current $14.3 trillion cap.

American people being undertaxed in not the problem with our federal budget, any more than being under-exercised is the problem with this guy's weight control.

Solve the real problem - over-consumption by the government.

Every time a GOP leader says something is not negotiable, they trade it away for magic beans the very next day.

Boehner, the Democrats naturally oppose him as he seeks their votes, and the Republicans will learn he is just another sell-out if they have the knowledge to figure out the scenario.

For now, I’ll take him at his word. This is GOOD news, of course, and I’m loving it...

You have to remember this is Free Republic. There are people here who spend more time trashing GOPer than they do trashing RATers.

I agree - this is good news and while its too early to breathe a sigh of relief, this is exactly the stand a lot of folks around here have been looking for.
It is significant that the speaker decoupled the debt ceiling from default.

For now, Ill take him at his word. This is GOOD news, of course, and Im loving it...The last time I took Boehner at his word, we got $500 million in actual cuts that he said was $68 Billion in budget cuts.
Or don't you remember that? Why shouldn't we go after the Pubbies first? We put them in office, and we know what the Democrats are going to do.
Conservatives and Tea Partiers enabled Boehner to assume the Speakership. If he wants to stay there, he'd better stick to his word.
Damn right I'm skeptical.

When a senior Republican says something is “dead in the water” or “off the table”... what they really mean is.. “around the corner.”

Are you buying this? From a negotiator who openly told Obozo that the GOP would not allow the precious government to shut down before the CR negotiations even began? This from a negotiator who opened his CR negotiations with his Best and Final Offer of $32 Billion?
I am not believing a word of this nonsense. Next up - "Well the GOP cannot allow the USA to default on its debts, so we will wait for the 2012 budget to extract budget concessions from our friends across the aisle. Vote for us in 2012 and we will get rid of Obama!!!.
Talk is cheap. Don't advertise your negotiating position - just show us the results AFTER you get something for the CONSERVATIVE base that put you in charge of the House.
