Cher spent months avoiding her transgender son Chaz Bono as he went through the process to become a man. She says she was terrified she wouldn't recognize him as her child.
Bono was born Chastity - Cher and ex-husband Sonny Bono's only daughter - and she broke her mother's heart when she came out as a lesbian. Chaz feared more heartbreak was to come when he revealed his plans to undergo a lengthy and extensive sex change procedure, but Cher took the news well.
However, once the process started, the pop superstar kept her distance.
In new documentary Becoming Chaz, which debuted on Oprah Winfrey's new OWN network, Cher says, "I was so nervous. I hadn't seen her... and I was putting it off.
"My boyfriend finally said, 'This is crazy, just do it.' I said, 'I'm so terrified of what will happen. If I don't recognize her, what will happen?"
Cher admits there are many changes she's slowly having to come to terms with: "At some point, I'm gonna have to start calling her 'him'... It doesn't seem comfortable to me yet. Actually I just can't remember... and I guess I'll start forcing myself... (but) I'm not sure she cares."
She reveals she asked her transgender son if she could have a copy of his old voicemail message - because it was her daughter speaking.
She adds, "I was hysterical one day because I was calling Chaz's answering machine and I realized it was her old voice, and then I said, 'Chaz is there a way I can save it because I will never hear that voice again?' And there wasn't, it was gone.
"That's the most traumatic thing that has happened to me in this whole thing - hearing her voice and knowing I'll never hear it again."

I wonder why mental illness related to sexual identity is accepted and humored (at least on the left), when other mental illnesses are overdiagnosed and treated aggressively. Even when the criteria for naming them as mental illnesses is weak (e.g. ADHD).
People like Chastity Bono need help. They don’t need quacks who are all too happy to mutilate them for profit. Where is the research being done on actual treatments that would allow these people to live normal lives? How much therapy has Chastity had related to uncovering and addressing the roots of her identity issues? Because these issues have not been addressed, what other torments will she impose on herself in her search for normalcy?

You called it like it is and are correct, it’s a mental illness. That said, you will also be called a hatemonger for calling it like it is.
I was thinking the same thing........she was a she, and had a girlfriend.......now she’s a he, and has a boyfriend. So she went from being a lesbian to a gay man. I guess her/his goal is to avoid being heterosexual.

Unless “Chaz-tity’ is one of the VERY rare individuals who has the genetic mutation which makes her an hermaphrodite, they she has two ‘X’ chromosomes. This means that no matter how much she mutilates her body, she was, is and always will be, female.

She was an adorable child. I am sure if she could tell the story of her childhood, we wouldn’t be surprised at all that she is not right in the mind IMHO.

I agree. Imagine who and what trampled their way through the “Cher” households during her childhood years and what they did to that poor kid. Her psychosis is owned by Cher.
I feel sorry for her. She’s all screwed up because of those idiot ideas around her.

It is and I feel very bad for Cher. She may not be the greatest woman or mom in the world, but I’m quite sure she is far from the worst.
I can’t imagine how difficult it must be for a parent to have such a troubled child, in this or other ways.
It’s easy to blame the parents but I don’t think that is fair. And, quite frankly, I think it is especially unfair that on these threads it is always Cher who is singled out for blame.
It seems to me that Sonny and Cher both loved their daughter very much. I’m sure they both still do.
Yes, I’m glad Sonny was spared the pain of seeing this, but Cher is the one who is still around and has to deal with it. And when I think of all the pressure a show biz person like Cher must be under to say “oh, it’s just WONDERFUL!”, well my heart really goes out to her.
