ATLANTA (AP) --- Newt Gingrich, the House speaker who led a national GOP resurgence in the 1990s before facing ethics questions and resigning, is running for president.
Gingrich's announcement, made on social networking websites Monday, came after months of public flirting with a bid. He enters a slow-to-form GOP presidential field that has left some Republicans craving more options as they search for a nominee strong enough to credibly challenge President Barack Obama.
The former Georgia congressman, well-known to most Republicans, brings to the race a years-in-the-making political machine with ties to early nominating states as well as a network of supporters and donors. But his personal baggage --- he's acknowledged marital infidelity and has had two divorces --- could hinder his chances of winning the party's presidential nomination more than a decade after leaving the House.
Still, he spoke confidently of wide support.

Uh, no, Newt, you didn't get better. Please, move to Boca Raton or wherever it is in Florida that people go to die, and we'll all pretend that you never happened...
Great marketer, lousy leader, more baggage than an overweight 747. Juuuuussst what we need.
Who do you want? Trump? Huckleberry? Mitt? Daniels? How about Paul?
what a waste of Newt’s money!
No Way would I vote for him.
Sorry Newt—no more McCainites.
What are you thinking?! When he was my Congressman, I watched him fold in the face of a manufactured tempest quicker than a bad poker hand in Biloxi. He had just been overwhelmingly reelected and because of a disingenuous attack from the MSM he turned tail and fled the State of Georgia altogether.
He is a bore, a spineless coward, and a unprincipled weak-minded fool. He has never met another person that he didn't try to impress with his presumptuous intellect. He is an empty shirt with feet of Clay. If there is any politician that I wish I could rescind my votes for, it is Newt Gingrich, and I voted for Richard Nixon.
So exciting to hear —can’t wait to NOT vote for the Newt.
In with the Old, out with the Newt.
Oh hell no!
I’m pretty sure we saw this movie before.
lol, I am not interested in New-the-socialist, I only opened the thread for the laughs and to feel the love....
Newt lost his way supporting global warming and some other crazy ideas. I can’t support him. He did a lot of good in 1994 and I am grateful for that. I don’t hate the guy as do many FReepers. But his time has come and gone.
Conservatives won’t support him. Liberals won’t support him. Independents will find someone else. Who the heck is going to support Newt Gingrich for President? I guess I don’t understand why he is running.
No retreads.
I would be more excited by a flying fart out of a gnats ass.
I want Palin to announce.
The only person that mystiquely fires up the conservative base, is that Christie dude from Jersey. I don’t know much about him,..but everytime i hear him speak,..he is straight forward,..never with a script, and what he says makes sense, and people nods their heads. Too bad he isn’t running. Guys like him come along once in a generation. Seems a little crude, but maybe the conservative base needs something else than recycled lifetime politicos. Why can’t we find a former veteran,..who became a CEO of a successful business, has a decent marital track record with kids, that will run for president? Is that too hard to find?
wow, not one post supporting das Newt.....hey newt can you hear us now.
As if the slate couldn’t get worse...
Remember that old line from 1976, I think it was. Morris K. Udall came into a store in NH and told the men gathered there that he was running for President. They said, “Yea, we heard. We were just laughing about that.”
He looks like the Keebler Elf in this photo. I can see him baking cookies.
Newt is one of the smartest conservative commentators there are. But that’s where he belongs.
