U.S. companies added more jobs than expected in April, but the unemployment rate rose for the first time in five months and the economy's recent slowdown is likely to keep a lid on gains.
Nonfarm payrolls rose by 244,000 last month as the private sector posted the strongest employment gain in five years, the Labor Department said Friday in its survey of employers. The March data were revised upward to show an increase of 221,000 jobs, from a previous estimated gain of 216,000.

I for one sure am glad for all this hopey/changey bull squeeze. If it wasn’t for the hopey/changey fairy, why we might have lower unemployment, gasoline and food costs and that would be bad because America, as we all know thanks to the hopey/changey fairy is an unfair place using far too many of the worlds’ resources. It’s true folks, his policies have brought this about BECAUSE HE THINKS WE DESERVE IT. He sees it as his personal mission in life to punish us for over 200 years of a standard of living higher than HE thinks we deserve.
I've never seen the Obama administration's PR speak summed up more clearly. ;)
One Million Apply for 62,000 Jobs with McDonalds
Friday, May 06, 2011
(photo: AP) There has been so much talk in Washington and in the news about the national debt, terrorism, wars and healthcare that one might think these are the issues that most concern Americans in 2011. But opinion polls consistently show that none of these issues is as important to most Americans as the Big Issue: unemployment and the economy.
An unusually vivid example occurred on April 19, which McDonalds declared National Hiring Day, encouraging people across the country to apply for a job.
The worlds biggest restaurant chain reported that it received one million applicants for open positions, which resulted in 62,000 people gaining employment. Another 900,000 plus were turned down.
A McDonalds spokeswoman said the company had planned to hire only 50,000 new employees. But the intense demand prompted it to take on an additional 24% in staff.
Throughout the country, the dearth of job opportunities prompted huge numbers of people to ask Ronald McDonald for employment. In Florida, for example, 100,000 applications were submitted for about 4,300 positions. In Chicago, more than 75,000 job-seekers vied for 2,000 openings.
So, will Obamanation be on TV talking about this accomplishment?
The unemployment stats are so cooked for political purposes that they really mean nothing.
The primary stats you should look at are total federal tax revenues (which has been increasing of late) and the M1 versus M2 money supply. Both M1 and M2 have both been increasing over the past couple of years, but M1 is growing hugely as compared to M2.
What is the U-6?
It has been 16%-17% for months.
Inquiring minds want to know.
Why is it that, since Obama has been president, the liberals and the MSM de-emphasize the unemployment rate? Instead, they talk about jobs created, jobs saved, or jobs related to Porkulus.
What I don’t get is, while it’s great that new jobs were created in April, since the unemployment rate went up, doesn’t that mean that more jobs were lost than created? Or more people are now in the work force?
Nancy Pelosi once blasted George W. Bush as unemployment approached 6% at one point when he was president. Now apparently Nancy doesn’t consider far higher unemployment to be an issue, now that a good Democrat is president.
The Progressives and their allies in our fifth-column media have turned our once great Republic into an Orwellian dystopia. And the public education system has churned out enough weak-minded sheeple to let them get away with it. We've always been at war with Eastasia, FRiend....
Wow, if they spin those numbers any harder we could use them to drill for oil!
Yeah. It's part of Obomas Waivers for Favors program.
FOFLOL, THERE'S a quote of the day!
Looks like Obama policy is turning us into a nation of hamburger flippers.
Yeah, but his wife won't allow us to eat any of them. It creates quite a dilemma.
The unemployment rate is so strange. How can we be a bigger percentage when we gained jobs? Of course many times we decreased jobs and the unemployment rate decreased too......Very strange.
Yeah, some “bump”: slightly fewer people intensely dislike him this week than last.
After several weeks of “unexpected” new jobless claims, I guess they couldn’t pretend that the unemployment rate was still 8.9%. It wasn’t then and it certainly isn’t now.
FDR did it three times, no less!
